Having cancer is utterly shit. Yes, there is a great deal of love and care and people are amazing. But, if we’re going to be authentic about it… it is totally and entirely shit to have cancer. So don’t judge the actions of others. End of rant. Merci.
@NicholasWhelan9@SimonMagus The Charities Act requires 'charities' to be established for charitable purposes ONLY and lists those purposes, of which one is 'the advancement of education'. Labour will find its pledge a wee bit tricky to implement
@NicholasWhelan9@SimonMagus Fully agree. Private, for profit businesses should not be able to claim charitable status. Not for profits providing scholarships and bursaries from income should.
@Rebeccaboden4@nazirafzal As state funded education isn't taxed, I'd be grateful to understand how charitable education is receiving a special preference.
@Rebeccaboden4@nazirafzal The OECD defines tax expenditure as "special preferences provided in income tax laws which depart from the normal tax structure and which are designed to favour a particular industry, activity or class of tax payer".
@Rebeccaboden4@nazirafzal I know some try to equate non taxation with subsidy. I agree there is a case for this definitional equation where competing businesses pay differing VAT rates. But do state and private schools pay differing VAT rates? Outome of education is a different topic of course.
