The Exodus Isn't Bad Luck. It's the Bill.

So Bruno's told the club he wants out. That's Ornstein reporting it, not some ITK account with 43 followers. Gordon's gone, Tonali's gone, Isak went last summer, and now the captain. And the easy explanation — big clubs circling because we've got good players — lets one man off the hook far too easily for my liking.

Players like Bruno don't leave clubs that are going somewhere. They leave clubs going in circles. And that's what we've been this season.

One stat has bothered me all year and I keep coming back to it: 25 points dropped from winning positions. Worst in the league. We scored first in seven of the fifteen defeats. Thirty goals conceded after going ahead, which is a Premier League record, and not one you want. Once is unlucky. Thirty times over a season is coaching. Game management, subs, structure, call it what you want. Sort even half of that out and we're in Europe and none of this summer happens.

The frustrating bit? Eddie's seen this before. He's admitted himself he stayed at Bournemouth a season too long while they stagnated — dropped 17 points from winning positions the year they went down. This season we beat that. His own worst season, and we topped it. He warned us what his teams look like when they've gone stale, and we watched it happen anyway.

Then the summer signings. Elanga, no goals and one assist. Wissa barely worked into the side. And Woltemade — a proper number 9 — spending chunks of the season shunted into midfield because we never settled on a system after Isak left. A whole year and no plan that got the best out of any of them. Brentford, West Ham, Sunderland away... those weren't off days, that was the pattern.

And that's the bit people miss when they say Bruno's leaving "because of the club's direction." Where do they think direction comes from? Stagnation cost us Europe. No Europe costs money. No money forces sales. And every sale tells your best player the ceiling's been hit. Bruno hasn't stopped loving Newcastle. He's stopped believing we're still climbing. Big difference.

None of this wipes out what Eddie's done here, before anyone starts. The great escape, two Champions League qualifications, the cup. Seventy years, ended. He's one of the most important managers we've ever had and I'll argue that with anyone. But being grateful and being honest are two different things, and clubs that can't tell them apart end up watching their best players leave. One by one. Then all at once.

Bruno's request isn't the crisis. It's the invoice. And it's addressed to the dugout. 🖤🤍 @NUFC
