A huge amount of the plastic we use every day begins as natural gas pulled from the ground in places like western Pennsylvania. Edward Bernays, the father of modern propaganda and public relations, taught the powerful how to 'engineer consent' — not by force, but by slowly shaping what the public accepts as normal, desirable, and inevitable.
Look at what's happening right now in Salamanca, NY, on Seneca Nation land: A rural school district is rolling out 'Sally,' a humanoid robot as a 'teaching assistant.' It's just one pilot. Just for high school STEM. Just 'supplemental.' Never a replacement, they say.
This is the classic Bernays playbook.
Step 1: Introduce the 'innovation' in a small, under-resourced community where resistance is weaker and the optics of 'equity/tech access' play well in the media.
Step 2: Frame it as exciting progress while downplaying the deeper agenda — acclimating children to emotional bonds with machines.
Step 3: Normalize it through repetition and positive imagery until humanoid 'teachers' feel ordinary.
Step 4: Scale it nationwide, as corporations profit and human educators are gradually sidelined.
The plan isn't a sudden robot takeover. It's incremental normalization — turning our children into the first generation that sees artificial companions as legitimate authority figures. Breaking the sacred human-to-human transmission of knowledge, culture, and empathy.
Bernays knew: Control the symbols and stories, and you control the future. This robot in Salamanca is not the end goal. It's the stepping stone.
Wake up before the 'unthinkable' becomes the everyday. Demand real human teachers. Protect the next generation from engineered consent.
What starts on the reservation today will be in every classroom tomorrow if we stay silent.
