🇨🇳🇰🇷Every country hosting large numbers of Chinese students should remember the 2008 Seoul incident.

In April 2008, during the Beijing Olympic torch relay in Seoul, the CCP mobilized around 6,500 Chinese nationals, mostly students, who violently attacked about 180 Tibetan human rights activists.

Hundreds chased several activists into the Seoul Plaza Hotel lobby and brutally assaulted them. An ordinary Korean man was beaten for over 30 minutes simply for holding a leaflet. The mob also attacked Koreans with metal poles, struck riot police, and assaulted foreigners wearing “Free Tibet” T-shirts.

This event showed how quickly China can mobilize its citizens abroad to intimidate or attack on command. It shocked Koreans and planted the seeds of anti-China sentiment.

Eighteen years later, the number of Chinese nationals in South Korea has quadrupled. The CCP’s political and economic penetration may now be beyond control, and our fight against it may already be too late.

Nations must approach Chinese students and immigrants with far greater caution.

A Chinese man has pleaded guilty after attempting to board a flight to China with trade secrets stolen from his Kansas-based employer, federal prosecutors announced.

Zhang Junjie, 57, a naturalized U.S. citizen also known as Jeff Zhang, pleaded guilty on April 1 to one count of making a false statement.

As a senior material and process engineer for a Wichita aviation firm, Zhang had access to proprietary data. The company flagged him to the FBI in 2018 following suspicious behavior during a trip to China.

In September 2019, Customs and Border Protection agents intercepted Zhang at a Dallas airport before he could depart for China.

Zhang initially told agents he possessed no work-related data on his electronic devices. However, a search of his laptop and thumb drives revealed documents labeled "Proprietary" and "Confidential," including aviation blueprints.

While Zhang claimed he was authorized to carry the files, his employer later confirmed to prosecutors that his statement was false.

The proprietary data found in Zhang's possession is estimated to be worth between $95,000 and $150,000, according to the plea agreement.

Zhang faces a maximum sentence of five years in prison and a $250,000 fine. His sentencing is scheduled for July 23.

"Intellectual property theft causes U.S. companies across numerous sectors to lose billions of dollars a year," said Ryan A. Kriegshauser, U.S. Attorney for the District of Kansas, noting that "insider threats from rogue employees" remain a significant risk.

The U.S. economy loses up to $600 billion annually to IP theft, with the Commission on the Theft of American Intellectual Property identifying China as the world's primary infringer.

In response, lawmakers recently introduced the Combatting China’s Pilfering of Intellectual Property (CCP IP) Act, which seeks to impose sanctions on entities involved in theft and bar entry to senior Chinese officials.

This case follows the November 2025 sentencing of another dual U.S.-Chinese citizen who received 46 months in prison for stealing sensitive missile-tracking technology.
