.@o_guest & @andrea_e_martin present a superbly elucidating analysis of what they term C- vs. M-connectionism. Having been educated myself in C-connectionism in the 90s, left column resonates so much with me & right column explains much of my confusion with current practices. 5/n

LLMs are now trained >1000x as much language data as a child, so what happens when you train a "BabyLM" on just 100M words?
The proceedings of the BabyLM Challenge are now out along with our summary of key findings from 31 submissions: https://t.co/zli0jzA1XP

Thanks again to all the speakers and to @socmathpsych for sponsoring the workshop!
We are happy to share our new commentary on why using language inclusively for transgender people is perfectly appropriate biologically, socially, and scientifically.

Prof. @bdzinszer for instilling careful research design and rigor in research
Prof. @DeonTBenton for sparking my passion in cognitive development and always encouraging me
I would not be who I am today without all of you. (2/2)
Nice ✅ Swarthmore has given me so much. I am grateful for all of my friends and mentors who’ve given me so much guidance and support. I truly found my home and family at Swarthmore. Till next time.
Oh. And haven’t seen Professor Ward without a mask in some time
In particular, I’m thankful for
Prof. Emily Paddon Rhoads for being my first inspiration for excellence in scholarship and always showing me kindness
Prof. John Blanchar for stewarding the poli sci major into pursuing psychology 1/2)
Finally done with everything before my graduation ceremony. Hopefully there will be far less writing for things I don't care about in the future.

It’s one thing to think something is going to harm the field. You can respond with arguments. It’s something else to say work that many of us find quite respectable is garbage. I think that was the initial problem with Chomsky. Every alternative was always just garbage (or idiocy as in the email). I think we should do better.
"Rethink reporting of evaluation results in AI" - a valuable call for transparent reporting of full evaluation results for reanalysis. Important for psychology, and even more critical for new AI systems where reproducibility is difficult and expensive.

People are testing large language models (LLMs) on their "cognitive" abilities - theory of mind, causality, syllogistic reasoning, etc. Many (most?) of these evaluations are deeply flawed. To evaluate LLMs effectively, we need some principles from experimental psychology.🧵
