@AndrewHWestern It's politics of envy pure and simple. Has, in fact, cost the exchequer money while damaging the aspirational middle class.
The super rich don't care, they can afford it. All you're doing it taking our of the hands of more people
Proof of three things:
1) John Healey is not the shrinking violet some in the military feared
2) The government is in no way taking the current threats to the defence of the realm seriously
3) Starmer government is a sinking ship which can't get out of the docks on key issues
This is bullshit.
What I ACTUALLY said is we "cannot have another left-wing government. But I'm afraid that Reform has quite a lot of left-wing ideas. They want more benefits. They want nationalisation”
I then said.
On "deals, non-aggression pacts and so on....I'm just saying no. It's just no, no, no, no, no, no, no."
Because it's bankrupting the country, because many who get it are millionaires and don't need it.
I don't think anyone is suggesting not increasing the pension, but watering it down significantly is inevitable. It's already 5% of GDP (2x the defence budget and more than education). By 2037 it'll be more than 6%.
What departments and budgets are you cutting to pay for it? Who are you taxing even more?
This is very significant - Defence Secretary quits over defence spending saying govt plan 'falls well short' of what is needed - Healey has always been loyal to Labour, but looks like he felt he had to be loyal to his commitments to defence too
Starmer and Reeves are too weak to cut welfare.
So they’re talking about cutting transport infrastructure to fund defence.
This would be economically stupid - and the mother of all u-turns.
More money for millionaire boomers. Paid for off the backs of broke millennials. The real pension scandal is that this generation will have broken the country with their entitlement and there won't be a state pension is 30 years, let alone a triple lock
Hinkley Point C might be delayed again.
Why? Because Natural England say the £700 million spent on fish protection at Britain's next nuclear power station is not enough.
We can't go on like this.
@peterkyle@BBCSimonJack Government doesn't have a great record picking winners (Leyland, Concord, OneWeb) but that market does. To get growth, get out of the way.
The less your doing, the better. Go play golf and take Rachel from Complaints with you.
@leftontheradio@implausibleblog Then what? They pay your spiteful exit taxes and no one comes here to build it run companies again. When will you lot realise we can't tax our way to wealth, it's extractive not productive
Trickle down economics has failed.
Instead, many of our problems come downstream from the greed of those in power at the top.
It's time to end Rip Off Britain.
