On the night the Titanic sank, a 21-year-old college student watched his father die.
Hours later, doctors told him both of his legs would have to be amputated.
Instead, he got up and started walking.
His name was Richard Norris Williams.
And surviving the Titanic was only the beginning of his story.
In April 1912, Richard and his father, Charles Duane Williams, boarded the Titanic as first-class passengers in Cherbourg, France.
They were traveling to America so Richard could continue his studies at Harvard.
When the ship struck the iceberg on April 14, father and son made their way to the deck together.
Then disaster struck again.
As the Titanic sank, one of its massive funnels collapsed.
The falling structure hit Charles Williams and killed him instantly.
Richard was standing beside him.
He narrowly escaped the same fate.
Moments later, he was in the freezing North Atlantic.
The water temperature was around 28°F (-2°C).
Most people survived only minutes.
Richard spent roughly six hours in the water or clinging to one of the partially submerged collapsible lifeboats before rescue arrived.
When the RMS Carpathia finally picked up survivors at dawn, his condition was severe.
His legs were frozen from the knees down.
The ship's doctor examined him and delivered a grim verdict:
Both legs would need to be amputated.
In 1912, severe frostbite often meant gangrene, infection, and death.
Amputation was considered the safest option.
Richard refused.
He reportedly told doctors that he was going to need his legs.
Then he got out of bed.
Against medical advice, he began walking the deck of the Carpathia every two hours.
Day and night.
Step after painful step.
For four days.
By the time the ship reached New York, his condition had improved enough that amputation was no longer necessary.
He walked off the ship on his own.
Most people would consider that the defining story of a lifetime.
For Richard Williams, it wasn't.
A few months later, he enrolled at Harvard.
Then he returned to tennis.
In 1914, he won the U.S. National Championship, the tournament that would later become the U.S. Open.
In 1916, he won it again.
Over the following years, he became one of the best tennis players in the world, winning multiple major doubles titles and representing the United States internationally.
Then came World War I.
Williams served in the U.S. Army and distinguished himself in combat.
France awarded him both the Croix de Guerre and the Legion of Honor for his service.
After the war, he returned to tennis once again.
At the 1924 Paris Olympics, he badly sprained his ankle during the mixed doubles tournament and considered withdrawing.
His partner, Hazel Wightman, refused to let him quit.
Williams played much of the tournament barely able to move.
Together, they won Olympic gold.
Over the years, he became a Davis Cup captain, a respected figure in American tennis, and eventually a member of the International Tennis Hall of Fame.
Yet people who knew him rarely heard him talk about any of it.
Not the Titanic.
Not the championships.
Not the war.
Not the medals.
Not the Olympic gold.
In fact, he disliked attention so much that later in life he had approximately 160 tennis trophies melted down into a single silver serving tray.
He used it to serve drinks to guests in his Pennsylvania home.
Most visitors had no idea what it was.
Or what it represented.
A Titanic survivor.
A two-time national champion.
A decorated war veteran.
An Olympic gold medalist.
A Hall of Famer.
All hidden inside an ordinary tray sitting quietly on a side table.
Richard Norris Williams died in 1968 at the age of 77.
If you had met him, he probably wouldn't have told you any of this.
And that may be the most remarkable thing about him.

Below that, he posted genuine customer complaints and bad experiences shared by Airtel users.
The website went viral.
Soon Airtel's team contacted him and requested that he take it down.
He agreed.
But with one condition:
"If Airtel customers face similar issues again, they can email wesuck@airtelblack .com. If the complaint is genuine, the website goes live again."

In the 1960s, a direct flight to Neptune would have taken nearly 30 years. That was longer than most spacecraft could survive. Reaching the outer planets seemed almost impossible.
But one engineer, working quietly with a pencil, found a way around this problem.
Gary Flandro, a scientist at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, was asked to study how spacecraft might travel to the distant planets despite the limits of rocket technology at the time. Fuel was scarce, and engines were not powerful enough for such long journeys.
Flandro turned to a clever idea from physics called a gravity assist, sometimes known as a planetary slingshot. The concept is simple in principle. When a spacecraft passes close to a large planet, the planet’s gravity pulls it in and then flings it forward. In doing so, the spacecraft steals a tiny bit of the planet’s motion around the Sun. The planet slows down by an amount too small to notice, but the spacecraft gains a huge increase in speed without using any fuel.
With only paper, pencil, and the limited computers of 1965, Flandro calculated the future positions of Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. What he found was remarkable. In the late 1970s, these giant planets would line up in a rare formation. This alignment would allow a single spacecraft to travel from one planet to the next, gaining speed at each step.
This opportunity appears only once every 176 years.
Flandro showed that a spacecraft could use Jupiter’s gravity to reach Saturn, then use Saturn to reach Uranus, and finally use Uranus to reach Neptune. This chain of boosts would cut the travel time to Neptune from about 30 years down to just 12.
This elegant piece of mathematics changed everything.
It became the foundation for the Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 missions, both launched in 1977. Thanks to this precise planning, the two spacecraft sent back the first close images of the outer planets. They later continued their journey beyond the solar system, becoming the first human-made objects to enter interstellar space.
All of it began with a simple insight, worked out by hand, that turned an impossible journey into a reachable one.
He was such a heavy smoker that he would sometimes light up even in the operating room. When ash from his cigarette fell onto the surgical table, he reportedly brushed it off with a joke: “Don’t worry—it’s sterile!”
In the years after World War II, countless Soviet veterans struggled with severe leg injuries that refused to heal. Complicated fractures, chronic infections, and deformities often left physicians with limited treatment options. Working in the city of Kurgan, surgeon Gavriil Ilizarov pursued a radically different idea: that bone could regenerate if it was slowly and carefully pulled apart. During the 1950s, he developed a circular external fixation device made of metal rings and tensioned wires that gradually separated bone segments, stimulating new bone growth in the gap between them.
This breakthrough, later known as distraction osteogenesis, transformed the treatment of complex fractures, limb deformities, and shortened limbs. Although Ilizarov’s work remained largely unknown outside the Soviet Union for decades, it gained worldwide recognition in the 1980s when he successfully treated Italian explorer Carlo Mauri after multiple previous surgeries had failed.
Today, the Ilizarov method is used across the globe and is regarded as one of the most significant innovations in the history of modern orthopedic surgery.
In 1958, a divorced single mom got fired from her secretary job for being a bad typist.
21 years later, she sold her side hustle for $47.5 million.
And her teenage helper would go on to help invent MTV.
Her name was Bette Nesmith Graham.
Before she became a millionaire inventor, she was a struggling single mother in Dallas with no college degree and very few options.
She married young during WWII.
By 22, she was divorced, raising a son alone, and trying to survive on secretary jobs.
She eventually became an executive secretary at Texas Bank & Trust.
There was just one problem:
She was a terrible typist.
The bank had recently installed new IBM electric typewriters that made correcting mistakes almost impossible.
One typo could mean retyping an entire page.
Her son later remembered watching her sit at the kitchen table in “tears of panic,” terrified she’d lose her job.
But Bette had another skill.
She painted holiday window displays at the bank for extra money.
One day, while painting over a mistake on a window, she had a realization:
“An artist never erases mistakes. They paint over them.”
That night, she went home and mixed a white liquid in her kitchen blender using tempera paint.
She poured it into a nail polish bottle.
The next morning, she used it to cover typing errors.
It worked.
For five years, her boss never noticed.
Other secretaries did.
Soon, women from offices across the city were asking for bottles.
Bette started making batches at home with help from her teenage son, Michael, and his friends.
She called the product “Mistake Out.”

But when Ann Burgess listened to the tapes, she immediately saw the problem.
“This isn’t research,” she told them.

La inventó el doctor Benjamin Rubin, de los Laboratorios Wyeth, como alternativa económica a las pistolas de vacunación del ejército estadounidense. Costaba cinco dólares por cada mil unidades. Con un solo vial de vacuna podían hacerse hasta cien dosis. D.A. Henderson, director del programa de erradicación de la OMS, dijo años después que sin aquella aguja la campaña habría tardado mucho más. La llamó un milagro.
La técnica era simple: sumergir las puntas en la vacuna, apoyar la aguja en perpendicular sobre la piel del brazo y hacer quince pinchazos rápidos y ligeros en un área circular del tamaño de una moneda. La vacuna entraba por los orificios. El cuerpo respondía. Primero enrojecimiento, luego ampolla, luego costra. Al caer la costra, quedaba la marca.
Esa cicatriz no era un daño. Era la señal de que el sistema inmunitario había aprendido a reconocer y destruir el virus de la viruela antes de que llegara de verdad.
La campaña de erradicación de la OMS duró once años, de 1966 a 1977. En su punto álgido, la aguja bifurcada entregaba más de 200 millones de vacunas al año. La viruela desapareció de América del Sur en 1971, de Asia en 1975 y de África en 1977. El último caso natural ocurrió en octubre de 1977: un cocinero somalí llamado Ali Maow Maalin, que se recuperó. En mayo de 1980, la OMS publicó la portada de su revista con tres palabras en grandes letras: "Smallpox is dead."
La viruela había matado a más de 300 millones de personas solo en el siglo XX. Era una enfermedad que acompañó a la humanidad durante milenios, que desfiguró rostros, cegó ojos y vació ciudades. Y fue eliminada completamente del planeta por 300 millones de dólares, una aguja de cinco centímetros y décadas de trabajo colectivo.

While Mater jokes that Red is just shy, the real story behind the character is much more sadder.
The actor originally cast to voice Red was Joe Ranft, one of Pixar’s most important writers and storytellers, who tragically passed away in a car accident in 2005 before Cars was completed.
Instead of replacing him with another actor, Pixar chose to keep only the emotional sounds Joe had already recorded as a tribute to his memory.
That’s why Red stays silent in the film.
Not because he couldn’t speak…
But because Pixar didn’t want anyone else to become Red.
