Nepal may be a small country, but it's taking bold steps in global climate diplomacy.
Nepal’s climate vulnerability shapes its climate goals and strategies, with the Sagarmatha Sambad as a rising symbol of Himalayan climate diplomacy. https://t.co/TN1odIHL3y
a country that reversed deforestation, contributes less than 0.1% of global carbon emissions, and still suffers catastrophic consequences because of its geographical conditions and people still have the audacity to say, oh, it’s not global warming or climate change. fuck you.
The explanation for this catastrophe seems to have been a phenomenon called a glacial avalanche. We explain the science behind it https://t.co/jRssageFSh

Glacial avalanches have always been a hazard. There is a risk, though, that they will become more so in the future, as Earth’s climate warms https://t.co/3iprirkMiO
The beautiful people of Nepal consume fewer resources than almost anyone on Earth, are known for their extraordinary generosity, and do not deserve to die from a climate crisis driven by wealthy nations that refuse to end wars or rein in their relentless overconsumption.
We have almost doubled our forest area, conserved our wildlife, are close to being carbon negative, have almost 100% renewable electricity, and are already shifting to EVs. We haven’t exploited nature like many others have. Yet every year, we are among the victims of global warming.
Scientific studies report roughly 24,440 glacial lakes in the Himalaya, of which half are Supra-Glacial Lakes (lakes resting on the surface of a glacier). Nepal alone holds more than 2,000 glacial lakes. A recent study found 207 glacial lakes as very high-hazard and 345 as high-hazard. https://t.co/T29yBMXEPb
This is where the flash superflood on the Nepal-Tibet border today first began.
From an altitude of 17,000 ft on Langtang Lirung in the Himalayas, a ~2,000 ft-wide chunk of glacier ice snapped off and fell ~4,000 ft to the valley below, generating an impact 6.3% as powerful as the Hiroshima nuclear explosion and causing a Magnitude 5.2 seismic event.
Upon impact, this massive ice chunk was then pulverized into a violent 100+ ft-tall surge of glacier water, rocks, and mud that flowed into the nearby Trishuli River. Funneled by Nepal’s extremely steep and jagged terrain, the resulting flood wave became an unsurvivable wall of water and debris for the immediate communities downstream.
The Himalayan river systems are the bedrock of the subcontinent being able to support so much population. But they can also inflict disasters like today's. This is why we need cross-country (China-India-Pak-Nepal-Bhutan) coordination, not water war games.
A new development between Nepal and India on boundary front.
