3/ This latest ban on the memoirs of members of the 10th Regiment, w/c was predominantly composed of Malay Muslims, is part of anti-communism as counter-insurgency (Malayan Emergency), made operative through religious racialisation (Communism ≠ Islam).

2/ In 2011, it was the late Syed Husin Ali—scholar and co-founder of PM Anwar Ibrahim’s party—who took me to southern Thailand to meet members of the 10th Regiment of the Malayan Communist Party. Abdullah CD, leader of the 10th Regiment, who identified as Muslim, was still alive.

So the Malaysian Home Ministry has just banned the memoir of Shamsiah Fakeh—leader of the Conscious Women’s Movement (AWAS) & a member of the 10th Regiment of the Malayan Communist Party—which was first published in 2004 by UKM.
