Jammu & Kashmir Public Service Commission (PSC), which is responsible for selection of candidates for all gazetted vacancies in the Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh, will become virtually defunct next week with the retirement of its member Zubair Ahmed Raza. Appointed on 24 June 2020, a former judge Mr Raza was among the first appointees of the UTs reconstituted PSC. He is retiring on 10 January 2024. He would the 8th among the members retiring in the UT's first PSC in the last three and a half years.
Resignation of another former judge Sanjiv Gupta upon his appointment as a member of the Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT) for the Jammu and Kashmir bench on 1 September 2023, was the 9th exit of a PSC member. Retirement of Chairman Satish Chandra on 19 November 2023 is counted as the J&K PSC's 10th loss without replacement in the same period. A retired IAS officer, Chandra had been appointed as the reconstituted PSC's first substantive Chairman on 5 June 2022. With Raza's retirement next week, the J&K PSC will be left with just one member, namely Tariq Ahmad Khan, a former Director General of Planning. Except some clerical works, business at J&K PSC has come to a grinding halt in absence of its Chairman and members as almost all interviews, exams, result declarations and other decisions have been stopped.
