There is a new form of academic grifting that preys on (very legitimate) anxiety about the job market.
@ScienceMagazine did an expose on a company that pressures PhD students and postdocs to pay up to $9998 for for "career advice" services.
Many students allege they were pushed into purchasing services they didn’t want, can’t afford, and haven’t used. And were refused a refund.
This industry taps into early-career researchers’ anxieties about their professional futures. Typical emails and social media posts warn that “the longer you stay in academia after getting your PhD, the more you DAMAGE your career,” and “Do you know what happens if you fail a job interview? You get blacklisted.”
These career consulting companies now do rage farming strategies on social media as well, spreading false narratives and selective information to generate attention and money for their consulting companies.
If you were a victim and “feel that some of what was represented to them was fraudulent or misleading, they could…report this to the consumer fraud division of the state attorney general.”
You can also engage your university’s legal services, file complaints with the Better Business Bureau, or directly contact the company that gives you a load to cover these costs.
This industry has become a real toxic stew of bad behavior.
Thankfully, most universities and alumni associates offer career services and workshops for FREE! There is also abundant free advice online. And the unemployment rate for people with PhDs in STEM fields is extremely low.
Our own graduate program supports industry internships for PhD students to get experience and contacts outside academia. We should normalize and support these sorts of programs to help our students find good jobs and avoid getting exploited by the bad actors in this industry:
