This Chinese Orchid Tree grew from a tiny one-inch sapling I plucked from the ground in some people’s garden while working for a friend’s landscaping business a few years ago. 2022 is the first time it has flowered #springinNOLA
“A real, live polyglot.”
In a city where diplomats and embassies abound, where interpreters can command six-figure salaries, where language proficiency is résumé rocket fuel, Vaughn Smith was a savant with a secret. https://t.co/XUDgTQUJzC
And to think I actually lived in that beautiful place (in the mid-90s, for two whole years). Not as much billionaire-related bullshit then. Why do they have to fuck everything up? And L.A-style traffic jams now? Really? On those tiny twisting roads? 😳🔫 https://t.co/z1pHDHTyva
Umm, someone should mention this in some dystopian-ish novel… 😉
“Aside from whatever damage a tsunami might bring, the earthquake itself would bring widespread devastation… across a 140,000-square-mile area, including Seattle and Portland.” https://t.co/g9PbxP5ZTv
@blacklionking73 Omg just this Monday on the way to school my daughter was staring down at something out the window at a stoplight. When I asked what she was doing, she sighed and said “Just looking at the sewer grate. Feels like a Pennywise kinda day.” 12 year-old & she already HATES Mondays 😂
Everyone should read @bfwalter’s fantastic How Civil Wars Start. An expert’s clear-eyed perspective on where Democracy stands today (hint: it doesn’t look good, in the U.S in particular).
Just found out that F.D.R visited Brittany in 1918, photographed here in Bénodet (20 minutes from my hometown) where I used to spend all my summers as a kid. And yes, both my great-grandmothers wore traditional hats like these every day—albeit in a slightly different style.
But by the time she *does* care, it will be too late for this country to wake up to the existential threat our democracy currently faces—and 1/6 will be a day of national celebration. With luck, having dual citizenship, she will have moved the fuck away to France before that.
Until a year ago today my daughter used to have the coolest birthday, falling on 12th Night (official start of Carnival season in New Orleans), Epiphany, AND Joan of Arc’s birthday. Now January 6th has a different meaning, one she’s mercifully too young (12) to give a shit about.
Used the old dead-body-in-a-blanket trick for our Xmas tree removal this year. Worked like a charm, with nary a drop of blood left behind—I mean, pine needle.
Never had a game console at home until this Xmas (save for Atari back in the day) and I gotta admit Dying Light makes an interesting addition to my current reading of Colson Whitehead’s Zone One. Actually had a zombie nightmare last night 😂🧟♂️🧟♀️
