Ethiopia backed African liberation movements especially the African National Congress in South Africa by offering refuge, military training, and even an Ethiopian passport to Nelson Mandela during apartheid. Through the Organization of African Unity, it provided diplomatic, financial, and logistical support across the continent, helping legitimize anti-colonial struggles from South Africa 🇿 to Somalia 🇸🇴 solidarity some say has since been met with hostility toward Ethiopian migrants in South Africa.
126 years ago, on the 1st of March 1896, the Ethiopian Empire under Menelik II inflicted the greatest military defeat on a European colonial power during the Scramble for Africa, when they decisively defeated the Italians at the battle of Adwa.
At a time when European powers were carving up Africa during the Scramble for Africa, the Ethiopian Empire under Menelik II did what many believed was impossible. They defeated a modern European army in open battle and preserved their independence.
The Italian forces, equipped with rifles, artillery, and trained under European military systems, expected a quick victory. Instead, they were met by a highly organized Ethiopian army made up of tens of thousands of warriors from different regions, united under one goal. Leaders like Ras Makonnen and Empress Taytu Betul played key roles in coordinating forces and strategy.
The Ethiopian army used terrain, coordination, and timing to their advantage. Rather than fighting as scattered groups, they moved in disciplined formations, surrounding and overwhelming Italian brigades that had become separated. What followed was not just a victory, but a decisive defeat that shocked Europe.
By the end of the battle, thousands of Italian troops had been killed or captured, and the invading force was forced into retreat. It was one of the few times in history where an African nation successfully resisted European colonization on such a scale.
This is the battle of Adwa, the war between Ethiopia & Italy. On Sunday March 1, 1896. Ethiopian soldiers defeated Italian military. Ethiopia was never colonized. You wouldn’t be taught this African history in schools.
