According to reports, at least 547 people have been killed in Nepal and 5 in neighbouring Tibet after catastrophic flash flooding triggered by a massive Himalayan glacier collapse on August 26, 2026.

Emergency crews are scrambling to locate more than 1,400 missing people, including hundreds of foreign tourists.

The disaster has caused widespread chaos across north-central Nepal. The main areas affected are Rasuwa, Nuwakot and Dhading districts, along with communities along the Lhende Khola and Trishuli river corridors.

What caused the disaster?

• Glacier collapse: On the morning of Wednesday, August 26, an enormous chunk of glacier broke off high in the mountains on the Nepalese side of the border.

• Seismic force: The ice plunged roughly 7,000 feet into the river valley, triggering a massive debris flow. The impact registered as a magnitude 5.2 earthquake on automated detection networks.

• Wall of water: The resulting mudslide and displaced water sent a colossal wave down the Lhende Khola river valley, instantly obliterating everything in its path.
