Letting a decent-sized profit turn into a loss is what I call the Trading Cardinal Sin. You’re not compounding money—you’re compounding mistakes. Letting winners turn into losers is forcing yourself to make that money all over again. You’re self-creating a mountain to climb. This is one if the worst mistakes; makes my list of top 5.

William O’Neil’s Double Bottom is one of the classic patterns for identifying a potential trend change.
The Double Bottom is the classic W base:
- Stock pulls back after a strong run, bounces, then sells off again
- The second low undercuts the first, shaking out weaker holders
- The middle peak of the W stays below the left-side high
- The base typically needs at least 7 weeks and is usually 35% deep or less
- Buy point: $0.10 above the middle peak, ideally with volume at least 40% above average
You don’t wait for the old high.
Clearing the middle of the W signals that demand has absorbed the second selloff.
That’s what makes this pattern so useful - it can signal the transition from a downtrend into a new uptrend.
Everyone always says:
“Wait for the right environment to trade…”
BUT
Many rarely talk about how to know when it’s time to start pressing
Because there’s a BIG difference between:
A market you can trade
&
A market where you should be getting aggressive.
Here’s the step-by-step process I use to tell the difference:
1. Start with the moving averages
I use the 8/21/50 EMA's
When $QQQ / $SPY are above the 8/21 there is likely more momentum in the market
Under the 8/21 there is less and we are likely to see failed breakouts
Under the 50 EMA it will be very hard to get traction on longs
More importantly:
Is price respecting the EMA's on pullbacks...
OR
Are we just chopping around the moving averages
A great way to know if the market has no momentum is if the moving averages begin to flatten out
When the moving averages are flat that means momentum in the market is lacking
This gives me a basic read on the TREND, but this is where a lot of traders stop
They see SPY and QQQ above their moving averages and immediately think:
“Market is bullish. Time to go full size.”
Its not the whole story...
Moving averages tell you about trend
They don't tell you everything about the QUALITY of that trend.
An index can be above its moving averages while the market underneath it is still choppy, narrow, extended, or difficult to make money in.
So we need more confluence
2. Look underneath the indexes
This is where market breadth becomes extremely important...
I don't only want to know what SPY or QQQ are doing.
I want to know:
Is the average stock participating?
One simple way I like to visualize this is by comparing:
SPY → RSP
QQQ → QQQE
SPY and QQQ are market-cap weighted
That means a relatively small group of mega-cap stocks can have an outsized impact on what you're seeing.
RSP and QQQE equal-weight their constituents
So they can give you another perspective:
Is strength broadening out?
Or are a handful of huge companies doing most of the work?
If QQQ is pushing higher while QQQE is struggling…
That's different from seeing BOTH pushing higher together
Same idea with SPY and RSP
The more participation I see underneath the indexes, the more confidence I have that I'm dealing with genuine MARKET strength rather than strength concentrated in a few names.
3. Add NYMO to the picture
Now I want another look at what's happening internally.
NYMO (the McClellan Oscillator)
Helps me evaluate market breadth and momentum.
I'm not using it as some magical buy/sell indicator
I'm using it as another piece of confluence
Think of this entire process as building a case
Moving averages tell me:
“Trend looks healthy.”
Breadth tells me:
“More stocks are participating.”
NYMO gives me additional context around:
“Are the market internals improving and supporting what I'm seeing?”
No single indicator gets to make the decision
I'm looking for CONFLUENCE
But even after all of this…
There is one confirmation I care about even more.
4. Is YOUR portfolio getting traction?
This is the part traders massively underestimate...
Your own trades are giving you real time feedback about the environment
Ask yourself:
Are breakouts following through?
Are my positions holding gains?
Are stocks closing near their highs instead of constantly fading?
Are my stops getting room to breathe?
Am I hitting targets?
Are multiple setups working at the same time?
If the answer starts becoming YES across multiple trades…
The market may be telling you that your strategy is currently in sync with the environment.
That's what TRACTION is
And when I see:
Strong trend
Broad participation
Healthy internals
My own trades working
THAT is when I can start thinking about gradually increasing aggression.
Not from 0 → 100 overnight
You EARN the right to press
5. Let the market prove you right BEFORE doing more
This is probably the biggest mistake I see
A trader takes two positions:
Both immediately struggle, and they try to add two more
The thing is two trades aren't working…
Adding two more isn't going to fix the problem
Now you potentially have FOUR positions exposed to the exact same environment that already told you something wasn't right
If I'm taking good setups and they repeatedly aren't working, I'm not thinking:
“I need more trades.”
I'm thinking:
“Why am I not getting traction?”
On the other hand, imagine I take two trades and both begin working.
Then I find another quality setup.
That works too
Then another
& Now the portfolio also has some positions that are risk free
Meanwhile breadth is expanding, the indexes are trending, leaders are breaking out, and stocks are actually HOLDING their moves.
The goal isn't to predict when the perfect market environment is coming
The goal is to recognize it as the evidence begins stacking up.
My framework is simple:
Trend → Breadth → Internals → Traction → Press
And when those things begin deteriorating?
Do the opposite:
-Reduce exposure
-Get more selective
-Protect capital
Wait for the market to prove itself again.
Remember in trading less is usually more
