Ethiopia was never colonized.

For much of its history, it was one of the poorest countries on the continent.

Meanwhile, Vietnam was colonized by the French, devastated by decades of war, and is now on its way to serious economic prosperity.

If colonialism were the answer to why Africa is poor, Ethiopia should be rich and Vietnam should be broke. Neither is true.

When you have housing shortage, suddenly your contractor friends can place bids and build for new arrivals that we pay for, Ride share services are strained and our elderly and infirm find it difficult to schedule transportation for an appointment they now need to wait 6 months to get to. Inorganic growth of populations become a disproportionate burden on native populations. They also create a class that will be dependent upon assistance, ensuring the bureaucracy gets paid and gets a voter base. Its criminal on so many levels.

It's rare for imagery this iconic to emerge organically.

It's just a still taken from the body cam of Henry's murder and yet it is so poetic in its composition.

The pale white flesh of Henry's hand, visibly depleted of blood as he is moments away from death, is both contrasted against his dark clothing and illuminated by the rays of the flashlight such that the image takes on the characteristics of a renaissance painting.

Henry's hand is curled into something like fist. It naturally draws comparisons to Black Lives Matter and the "Black Power" Fist iconography, Henry's dying paleness evoking "White Power," the boogeyman we have destroyed our societies attempting to stymie.

But there is no "White Power." Henry is dying. The fist is literally shackled, constrained, and drained of life. It is being "attacked" by the begloved hands, artificial, latex, inhuman, contorted into the shape of a predatory claw. These are literally the arms of the state. The "Systemic Organism." Our ultimate tyrant.

These are not the hands of the individual officers to whom they actually belong, but rather the hands of a system, a meta-organism. Obamacare got rid of the corporations tax exemptions for HC, over a certain amount. They called good coverage the "Cadillac Tax" as a pys-op so people would feel it was targeting the rich. It used to be part of the compensation. Getting a job at 18 was for the insurance because you were no longer covered by the parents. It was an incentive to get a job. Lots of people didnt pay for health insurance, they may have had a co-pay or not, in fact if they were young and not ill they may have never even noticed or needed the insurance that came from their job. Once upon a time, we also had pensions.
