"How we remember and honor those who died in war matters. It comforts those left behind. It gives their sacrifice meaning. It reminds all of us that freedom is not free. The Dutch of the South Limburg region understand this." -@RobertEdsel, "Remember Us"

This Memorial Day, we remember the men and women who gave their lives in service to our country.
For more than 80 years, Dutch families have honored Americans they never met, keeping their memory alive. A reminder that gratitude can endure across generations. #MemorialDay
Remembrance does not end with one generation.
Eighty years later, Dutch families continue a remarkable promise to honor the Americans who helped liberate their country during WWII.
Grateful to see this story featured in @USATODAY as Memorial Day weekend begins.

“I hope that my daughter will do the same for your father & keep the memory living.”
For 80 years, a promise has been passed from one generation to the next. Now the Forever Promise Project connects families of the fallen with their Dutch grave adopters. https://t.co/jsL06dMKSE
It’s hard to believe it has been 12 years since The Monuments Men premiered in New York City and around the world, bringing to the screen the remarkable true story of the men and women who risked everything to protect & recover civilization’s greatest treasures during WWII.
At the Netherlands American Cemetery, one purpose guides everything: honoring the 10,000 American men and four women who gave their lives so that people they never knew might live in freedom.

It was an honor to stand alongside @usambnl to unveil the new panel for the Netherlands American Cemetery Visitor Center & discuss the @MonumentsMWfnd's Forever Promise Project.
We are fortunate to have such a dedicated public servant representing our nation in the Netherlands.
Today, Monuments Man Harry Ettlinger would have turned 100. A refugee from Nazi Germany who returned to Europe as an American soldier, Harry became family to me, and the star of every room he entered. Forever grateful to call him a friend.

As you gather today with loved ones, please pause to remember those unable to do the same today: Our brave men & women whose service allows us to enjoy #Thanksgiving, many unable to gather with their families because of an oath they selflessly took to serve this great nation.
#HappyThanksgiving everyone.
