An IT specialist with the Defense Intelligence Agency pleaded guilty to charges related to espionage in August 2026.

Nathan Vilas Laatsch obtained a degree in cyber security from Florida Polytechnic University in 2018 and was hired by DIA to work in their Insider Threat Division in 2019. He held a Top-Secret security clearance.

In March 2025 he sent an email to a foreign government official with the subject line: “Outreach from USA Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) Officer,”. The email included information about his position and photocopies of his work badges with personal information redacted to provide bona fides.

He also wrote his motivations were disagreements with actions taken by the Trump administration: “The recent actions of the current administration are extremely disturbing to me.... I do not agree or align with the values of this administration and intend to act to support the values that the United States at one time stood for. “

The FBI soon received the email through undisclosed means (the foreign government official likely reported it immediately). Although the Department of Justice did not clarify who Laatsch attempted to contact, the Sunday Times reported it was a German BND officer. An undercover FBI agent began communicating with Laatsch via email and a messaging app. DIA officials also installed a camera above his workspace to record his activities. Over the course of their communications, Laatsch indicated his interest in gaining citizenship in the foreign country as a reward for his efforts.

In late April 2025, Laatsch transcribed classified information from nine separate reports onto a notepad at his desk, then hid the pages in his socks when he left his office. He later uploaded the notes onto a thumb drive and left it in a dead drop at a park in Arlington, Virginia, which the FBI retrieved.

FBI agents arrested Laatsch in late May 2025 just after he conducted a second dead drop in Arlington, VA. On August 26th, 2026, he pleaded guilty to one count of attempting to transmit national defense information to a foreign government. He is scheduled to be sentenced on Jan. 27, 2027.

Russian paramilitary operative Olga Ivanovna Kulygina was an integral part of the surprise invasion of eastern Ukraine in April 2014, according to research by the Free Russia Foundation published in 2023.

Olga’s combat experience dates to the 1992 Transnistrian War, when she was just 20 years old. She participated ostensibly as a humanitarian aid worker, but was later described as a combatant by Alexandr Borodai, her close associate and self-proclaimed prime minister of the Donetsk People’s Republic.

Before the fighting began in 2014, she was already in the city of Sloviansk under cover as an expert in management theory from the Plekhanov Russian University of Economics in Moscow. She was photographed leading a squad-sized element of separatists on the ground by Pierre Crom. Sources vary as to whether she is affiliated primarily with the FSB or the GRU.

Olga was captured by Ukrainian forces a month later while attempting to transport arms and cash from Russia into the Donbas region. But Russia-backed separatists played hardball to get her back quickly, filming a mock execution of two captured Ukrainian officers and soon trading back at least 17 prisoners in exchange for Olga.

After the exchange, Olga appeared in the town of Siversk where she took over the city hall and repurposed a local club as a military hospital before moving on, according to the Kyiv Post.

By the following year she was a senior member of the Union of Donbas Volunteers, comprised of veterans of the Donbas conflict. When Russia invaded Ukraine again in February 2022, UDV personnel went into Ukraine as paramilitaries conducting reconnaissance, intelligence gathering, and direct-action missions.

In June 2022, the US Department of Treasury sanctioned the UDV as a whole and identified Olga along with fifteen others by name as participating in the war in Ukraine.

As of September 2022, according to the Russian publication Gazeta Metro, she was serving as a paramedic with GROM battalion inside of Ukraine.

Hassan Ahmed Abdillahi was a highly dedicated senior Kenyan detective who served as the Chief of Criminal Investigations ( CID Boss) for the Mombasa Port.

Ahmed was a seasoned detective within the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI, then known as the CID). Because of his competence and integrity, he was assigned to head the CID unit at the Port of Mombasa (Kilindini Port), one of the most lucrative and highly targeted gateways for contraband, tax evasion, and transnational crime in East Africa.

Ahmed primary mandate was to secure port cargo, dismantle sophisticated smuggling cartels, and investigate multi-million shilling tax evasion schemes.
In 2019, he was actively spearheading a crackdown on a deep-rooted syndicate involved in the fraudulent clearance and theft of shipping containers.

In 2019, Ahmed received critical intel from Interpol regarding a specific set of shipping containers arriving at the port. The international policing agency warned that a specific cluster of containers entering Mombasa was tied to a global illicit distribution grid.

Acting on this international intelligence, he successfully intercepted and recovered 39 transit containers that had been fraudulently cleared and illegally sneaked through the port without paying duty.

Upon opening the seized cargo, his team unearthed a massive contraband network. Investigators strongly suspected that the syndicate was using the stolen containers as a front for an international drug-trafficking ring.

The containers were part of a front network for an international narcotics pipeline. During the mid-2000s, Mombasa was emerging as a primary global transshipment hub ("the Smack Track") for South American cocaine and South Asian heroin destined for Europe and Dubai.

Opening those files meant signed death warrants for anyone who couldn't be compromised.

Ahmed's team began tracking clearing and forwarding firms tightly linked to powerful Coast and Nairobi politicians, including entities tied to the brothers of then-Juja MP William Kabogo. As the investigation intensified, he faced heavy internal pressure from senior government officials to surrender his file and release the seized cargo.

Ahmed's integrity made him a direct threat to powerful individuals. As his investigation intensified and drew closer to the masterminds, the operation triggered panic within politically connected cartels.

Ahmed began facing massive, direct intimidation from powerful political personalities pushing him to drop the container files.

When political intimidation failed to deter him, the cartel turned to a financial buyout.

A prominent Mombasa businessman was dispatched to offer him a KSh 4 million cash bribe to drop the case. Ahmed refused the money and vowed to prosecute the principal actors. Realizing he was incorruptible, the syndicate greenlit a professional contract hit.

In the days leading up to 2006 New Year's Eve, individuals working on behalf of the container cartels made frantic efforts to isolate Ahmed. He received multiple calls from intermediaries aggressively pushing him to attend private, late-night meetings to "reach a deal".

The individuals first attempted to lure him to a location in Nyali. When he declined, they abruptly changed the venue to a restaurant near Likoni. Sensing an ambush, Ahmed refused to honor any of the appointments.

Having failed to lure him into an isolated trap, the hit squad was forced to execute him at his residence. On the night of December 31, 2005, as Mombasa was celebrating, the assassins waited in the shadows outside his apartment block in the Ganjoni neighborhood.

As he pulled up to park, driving a foreign-registered vehicle that his team had seized from a local businessman under investigation.

When stepping out of the car, the gunmen emerged from the darkness and opened fire at point-blank range, killing him instantly.
