🧵A THREAD🧵
In less than 72 hours ...
My intention was to do an explainer for non-chronically Indonesia pol-obsessed people, but I'm not sure I've hit that tone exactly. This is huge and like all Schrodinger's Constitutional Crises, a difficult one to parse for casual observers: https://t.co/rdkO881RYI
It's quite obvious that Malaysia is adamant to treat the question of Palestine as a single, isolated issue to escape accountability for the grotesque human rights violations towards migrant workers and displaced persons here. No amount of Islamic washing will change this.
[chuckles] We know what that's code for:
"We will take everything unique and interesting about this historical landmark that Singaporeans loved, ignore it completely, and turn it into something modern and bland that renting expats will love"
Gentrification don't give a fuck about your history, your safe haven, your creativity, your livelihood, your loves, your aura, your safety, your dreams, your hard work, or YOUR PLACE.
It's just 'improving' a space for people they know they can get a profit from.
Imagine being at the forefront of modern architecture when you are first built.
Only to end up being part of a generic-ass condo.
Let's not even talk about the sheer class dystopia of the place turning into luxury apartments.
