@tacitdimension@purdyrebelkinch Like I think in the Hudson Valley and the Mohawk Valley, there are still a lot of people of Dutch descent. Probably also a lot more in Jersey.
@oldredink@purdyrebelkinch@tacitdimension But yeah the Dutch influence in the Vistula area is kinda underrated. There's even a town historically named "Prussian Holland".
@oldredink@purdyrebelkinch@tacitdimension Iirc there's also another area in now Poland that historically had a heavy Dutch influence but I don't really remember which.
@purdyrebelkinch@tacitdimension Tho like the majority of them traced their origins from the Palatinate (Pfalz), especially around the area known as Kurpfalz (Electoral Palatinate), around Heidelberg and Mannheim. There were also ofc other groups like Hessians, Alsatians, Swiss Germans, etc.
@purdyrebelkinch@tacitdimension It was actually more a broader term for Germans in Pennsylvania. There was a distinction between Fancy Dutch (the more mainstream ones) and the Plain Dutch (aka Amish), but most of the Fancy Dutch had assimilated to the Anglo-American culture by the 20th century.
Something that I notice a lot about older German men is they loce looking at other people's screens on public transport and pretend like they haven't done anything. At least like start a conversation about what you've seen.
