Publishers are less willing to take a risk on a series because a few very big series never finished, so customers are less willing to buy unfinished books. It hurts the whole industry, even if it doesn't personally hurt you.

The social contract is that if a writer starts a series, they will finish it if able. Large profile writers not following this makes customers more reluctant to buy unfinished series.

If that was the goal, I would have bought something like a setting book for an RPG. It wasn't the deal these authors made with their readers.

@Dinyasaur Tau are just more fun when the Tau empire believes its own pitch. That wouldn't make them good, they are still trying to conquer the galaxy and replace everyone else's culture with their own. Plus, the leaders are secretly all evil is just a boring way to write it.
