State Tourney Thoughts
D1: didn’t see any games
D2: Massillon so so impressive. True story of nobody picking them for a D2 title back in November and proving everyone wrong. What a comeback win over Westerville North.
D3: Santino Haney was one of my favorite players to watch this weekend. Trotwood has the best band in the state and I hope they make it to Dayton every year.
D4: Unreal how good Wyoming was. Idk how they lost any games this year.
D5: didn’t see any games
D6: Mark Schlabach has 22.2 wins per season since he started coaching. Guy runs a basketball factory at Hiland. Marion Local 20/43 from the FT line in the last two State Title games (10/25 vs Hiland).
D7: 300 boys basketball coaching wins for Coach Elwer. Cam finishes with 2,768 pts (6th) and a 91-14 record. DSJ one of the only teams this weekend who shot the ball really well. Can they repeat next year without Cam?
Also:
—Going from UD Arena to the Nutter Center is like going from the Taj Mahal to a JC Penney’s. Really hope all games are at UD next year.
—Crazy how differently the game is officiated in early December compared to Regionals & State. Guys were getting away with murder in a lot of games this weekend.
—Lutheran East first ever to 4 straight State Titles and now tied for 2nd most with 7 total. Duke would also win every NCAA Title if they played down in D3 come tourney time🤷🏻♂️
🎙️ Kon Knueppel on the importance of ball movement:
"That's how the game was designed to be played. Obviously, great players are gonna dominate the ball sometimes, but the game is designed to play together and as a team against the other team. When the ball is moving, it's the most fun for everybody."
"It feels really good when LaMelo (Ball) pump fakes and passes, and Brandon (Miller) does the same thing and passes, and we turned down two good shots for a great shot in the corner for me."
"And it goes the same way—you drive down the baseline or drive in the middle of the floor and kick it back into a guy that's wide open. That feels good. It makes everybody feel good, even if it goes in or not. I just think that's the beauty of basketball."
Tahaad Pettiford hasn’t started this season but is one of the best Freshmen in the nation
“Not a word. Not a body language, shoulder shrug, rolled eye ever from Tahaad. Because if he did, his dad would slap it right out of him”

Billy Donovan on the importance of good relationships with your teammates
“You have to love your teammates…It can’t just be sharing a jersey with people in a locker room…It has to be what are my teammates going to tell their kids”

✅ Just because you're a FROSH doesn't mean you can't be a leader.
✅ Just because you're a SOPH doesn't mean you learned it all last year.
✅ Just because you're a JR doesn't mean you get to be on varsity.
✅ Just because you're a SR doesn't mean you get to start.
Kirby Smart uses ONE statistic from Gallup to help him manage his team's culture.
He knows that everyone affects the culture.
He shares this number with his leadership team and it helps him categorize the team into 3 groups.
The 3 groups are:
• Engaged - They are loyal and productive.
• Not Engaged - They are just putting in the time.
• Actively Disengaged - They are unhappy and spreading their discontent.
So why does Kirby care?
He said, "In essence, then, the CEO’s job is to improve the ratio of engaged to actively disengaged workers."
His job is to figure out to level people up from:
• Not Engaged → Engaged or
• Actively Disengaged → Not Engaged
According to the latest Gallup study, the average for most organizations are:
• Engaged = 30%
• Not Engaged = 52%
• Actively Disengaged = 17%
He is constantly looking at his team to see what group they fall into.
He said, "I think that the organization starts at the top. And if you hold people accountable, and you hold people to a standard that you can make them understand they can move from actively disengaged, to not engaged and then hopefully to engaged."
Takeaway: Everyone affects the culture.
Your culture is everything. It's your behaviors and what you are willing to accept. What you reinforce is what the culture will sustain. When people are negative and actively disengaged then this will spread when you allow it. This affects the confidence and attitudes of everyone.
"You're either coaching it or allowing it to happen." - Kirby Smart

The tradition of the @OHSAASports basketball tournament CAN be saved!
I believe that I’ve come up with a reasonable way to preserve the State Final 4 that allows the Semi-Finals & Finals of all 7 Divisions to take place at 1 site (either Dayton or Columbus). By utilizing 2 arenas (Schott/St. John in Columbus OR UD/Wright St. in Dayton) you could keep the traditional State Final Four experience for all 28 teams who make it.
14 Semi-Final games played in 7 pods over the first 2 days. 7 state championship games all in stand alone time slots on Saturday/Sunday. 1 site utilizing 2 arenas & it could be accomplished (perhaps even Dayton for girls & Columbus for boys to allow both cities/universities to host??). Obviously the logistics would have to be negotiated between the universities & OHSAA…but it seems both parties would benefit so greatly that the logistics could be worked out.
Attendance would sky rocket. Revenues would increase (which would more than offset additional costs). Surrounding commerce would thrive. Fan experience off the charts (21 games in 4 days). And most importantly….the Players/Coaches/Communities of 28 teams would get to experience this incredible State Final Four EVENT every season.
Ohio has a chance to not only preserve its basketball traditions when it comes to the state tourney…but I would argue that this proposed state tournament format would allow the EVENT to become greater than it has ever been & would rival NONE. It would become the envy of every other state!
LET’S MAKE IT HAPPEN!
