The difference between the Democratic Party establishment and the Democratic Socialists of America no one is talking about is in both their names: democracy.
The Dems relied on networks of ethnic patronage, party seniority, dark money, and an alphabet soup of NGOs to try to decide who should *inherit* political fiefs.
The DSA relied on internal democracy to make endorsement decisions based on members’ direct preferences, and then proceeded to mobilize the voters themselves, without any special pleading to who “deserved” an elected office or a vote on the basis of ethnicity, where you were born, or anything else.
And voters, tired of an unresponsive government and party that continually silenced their preferences and policies, resoundingly chose democracy at the polls last night. People want a say. They want government of, by, and for the people. That’s what DSA delivered. It’s what the strategic and tactical machine of DSA is built on—the underlying principle that all voters are equal, that parties should respond to the demands of their rank-and-file members, and that no public servant is owed fealty on the basis of who they are or what patrons they have.
Listen, I don't care if you're straight. I have lots of straight friends, I just wish they'd stop pushing their agenda so brazenly in front of the kids. How do you even explain this to them? You don't wear two different types of shoes, do you? No!
