Business success is celebrated in the US while in Canada business owners are considered tax cheats and scorned. Capitalism vs socialism and a desire to redistribute wealth will block progress.

We shouldn't lose sight of how radical the minister's statement is here.

He's confirming that in the case of diabetes medication and contraception (and other drugs to follow), Canadians will lose access to their private drug insurance plans in favour of an inferior one imposed on them by the government.

In practice, this means that the government will unilaterally wipe out drug benefits negotiated through collective bargaining and other employer-employee arrangements. Workers could see their total compensation fall by an average of roughly $10,000-$20,000.

It will leave those affected (which represents a majority of Canadians) financially worse off and with far less comprehensive drug coverage.

This isn't evidence-based policy. It's a case of dogma-based policy.

If I was a federal political leader these are the priorities I would focus on:

1) extensive study on improving our per capita productivity

2) affordability plan - work with provinces and municipalities to coordinate immigration with housing, healthcare and education
