At Honolulu airport, the iconic runway 8R is used for departure. It’s a long taxi from the terminal, and you need to be careful not to overheat your brakes going out there.

The runway is an icon because it’s the first in the world to have been built entirely over water. A coral reef was used as the base, and the rest is material dredged from the ocean. A little over 2 miles long, it’s perfect for large, heavy jets.

While it’s true that some runways in the Pacific were paved by crushed coral, this runway is asphalt. Crushed coral actually ended up being a good construction material, as its porous & allowed water to drain, preventing pooling. There are not many crushed coral runways left today.

The taxi out is beautiful. You can often see paddle boarders & surfers nearby, to the right of the jet. You approach the edge of Hickam AFB, too, where you can see the “Alert” F-22s. You’d often see a broken KC-10 on the ramp there, as well…Hickam was a black hole for the KC-10.

On departure from 8R, there is an immediate, aggressive turn to the right, taking you out over the water. This keeps the noise down in Waikiki, and in an engine failure scenario, keeps you from having obstacles to clear, like hotels or the Diamond Head Volcano crater.

This runway brings back a lot of fond memories, and was often the jumping off point for missions that would take us to remote parts of the world. It’s gotta be one of my favorites!

These people are not playing around and violence against the innocent is their preferred method of communication

Biden removed Trump’s travel ban from terrorist nations and our border has been flooded with millions of fighting-aged men this past year alone, so those Hamas operatives are probably already here and waiting for the green light
