A great day of PL for educators in all disciplines!
Come see me talk about how to get past the scary unknown and start using some beginner-friendly GIS with your learners!
@MsWelbergen A laptop/tablet is required for 9-12 in NB, there's a subsidized purchase program through the province and some at school to use, but it is still a big cost for families.
The public consultation portal for the Advocate’s review of Policy 713 is now online. The full terms of reference and process are available on that page.

Something we miss in this discussion all the time is that there is huge difference in a kid not wanting to tell their family something AND a kid wanting to pick a good time for them and their family.
Most kids want to tell their families. They deserve the ability to choose when
Just because a student tells a teacher their preferred pronoun & name as the teacher takes attendance at the start of the term, does NOT mean that this kid needs counselling. Stop offering counselling for kids who are perfectly fine. #thekidsareok#Policy713#fearmongering 🏳️🌈
In my mind the major change is moving from the U16 child needing to be consulted before calling home as the 1st step to the parent needing to be consulted at the guest step.
Again again again it is adult comfort over child safety.
I don’t think we’re where we need to be on the discussion of lates in HS. I don’t agree that doing it whenever is fine. I think snowballing late work often makes kids feel worse. Also, this is a job & I am unable to mark a semester worth of work in 2 days before marks are due.
I have a strict "no-late-work" policy.
There's no late work.
There's only work.
Work worth doing.
It's due when it's done.
Done matters more than when.
#Project180
Additionally, I think hard and fast late penalties disadvantage poor students and students who have a lot going on at home or mentally. I am also a BIG believer in being judicious about assessing what you actually want to assess.
NB isn't immune from the wave of 'parental rights' where adult preferences reduce child safety. The fact that Hogan expects us to seek active permission for EVERY student who uses a different name is adding hours of work to our plates & enlisting us in the gender police🍋🏳️🌈🏳️⚧️
What am I missing here? Isn’t this exactly the same thing? Not forcing teachers to out students (like he could do that anyways) but instead requiring teachers to get permission from parents if students want to use a different pronoun and/or name at school?
How does Hogan NOT understand this? He can’t be deciding the fate of these kids and not understand this after weeks of teachers, PSSC, DEC folks, students, his own employees, GSA kids, NBIAA, HNB, Women’s Council, Pride in Education, Chroma, parents, EGALE Canada, etc - informing him repeatedly.
Hogan is not educable. Now we learn he’s a bully (Logan’s story in the media yesterday). Plus, based on this bullying report, he has absolutely no respect for 2SLGBTQ+ kids or the community. He needs to either step down or be removed from his position as Minister. #Resign #Policy713 #bully #EducationMatters
TEACHERS WILL NOT ABIDE BY ANY OF HOGAN’S CHANGES TO POLICY 713. We will NOT be his gender police!
Aside from the transphobic nonsense, it is immensely frustrating that Hogan and Higgs decide what is best for girls. If you ask them, there are lots of challenges for girls, trans girls aren’t on the list.
Meet Jack Petocz - the 18 yr old high school Florida student who is fighting Ron DeSantis. PIE brought Jack to NB this Fall for our annual high school GSA conference - such an inspirational leader to prove to our youth that they can fight back and that they have rights!
Jack was suspended from school as a level 5 threat after passing out Pride flags and encouraging a student walkout (he’s still under these suspension restrictions) - level 5 is the equivalent of a shooter in the school.
In Florida, it started with a Policy review - to see if kids were being taught material that matched their developmental age appropriately. Then it expanded to an attack on Trans kids. Sound familiar?
We can’t let the “Ron DeSantis” type leaders harm our kids. We aren’t Florida. When will our MLA’s stand up and say #EnoughlsEnough ? Where is your leadership? #stopthereview #policy713 #handsoffpolicy713 #werenotFlorida
There have been zero complaints according to HMB even though Minister Hogan specifically gave hockey as his example why they need to review #policy713 . ZERO!

Wow!Minister Hogan’s answers to @JeanneCBC are disgraceful. He’s embarrassing himself with EVERY answer. “I want to hang out with my hockey buddies. Does this mean I’m gay?” So much ignorance. How can this guy be our Minister of EDUCATION? #resign#educationmatters#policy713
"To be clear: The government of New Brunswick is responding to a series of homophobic and transphobic moral panics at the expense of youths’ safety. Homophobic and transphobic hate, not inclusive education, are a danger to children and youth."
Hey @Gov_NB were in the news for all the wrong reasons. See below @poitrasCBC@CBCNB@TJProvincial@KellyLamrockNB
Waves of walkouts across the province. It should be clear to the Minister that students know their lives are safer, better and more welcoming with policy 713 in place. https://t.co/b3PWAIsyc0
