Some journalists in Gaza aren't journalists at all. They're the propaganda arm of a combatant party. Some are even involved in Hamas's operational planning.

Other journalists in Gaza are actually trying to do real journalism, but under the rather obvious limitation that if they're too critical or cover things Hamas prefers to keep under wraps, they die.

The first kind are combatants and I'm perfectly happy with Israel targeting and killing them.

The second kind are not combatants and must be protected even if functionally they end up serving the Hamas war effort. They live in an unbelievably complicated and scary gray area. I know of specific examples of some that once wrote against Hamas, but their coverage changed as Hamas's goons came for them. They're trying to practice journalism in conditions I myself have never had to contend with.

And no, I don't know an easy and clear-cut way to distinguish between the combatant propagandist and the authentic but intimidated journalist.

If your coverage of the deaths of Gazan journalists doesn't include the above complexity, dear Western colleague, then you're not really doing journalism either. You're doing Hamas propaganda. And you're worse than the Gazan journalist who's forced to do so, because you're doing it unforced. They would critique Hamas if they could. You can but don't.

Omar has criticized Hamas, written about Hamas coming for him and his family, and now turned into a Hamas lackey.

Where are the great defenders of journalism defending the Omars of Gaza?

It certainly tweets as if it is and it comes up on the first page of google when you search "Iranian military" but it doesn't have a government checkmark and seems a bit suspicious in general.
