CBN Triumphs: Clears $7 Billion FX Backlog and Elevates Naira to New Strengths.
Under Governor Yemi Cardoso (@DrYemiCardoso)'s leadership, the Central Bank of Nigeria (@cenbank) has successfully paid off the $7 billion foreign exchange (FX) backlog, marking a pivotal accomplishment since his inauguration.
This achievement aligns with his initial commitment and is critical in creating economic confidence. On Wednesday, Mrs Hakama Sidi Ali, the CBN's Acting Director of Corporate Communications, announced the complete resolution of all legitimate FX backlog claims.
In another giant stride, Nigeria's external reserves have surged to $34.11 billion as of March 7, 2024, reaching an eight-month high. This uptick has positively impacted the parallel market, where the naira has significantly appreciated, now trading at N1400/$1 for those selling dollars.
A recent analysis by financial stakeholders has observed a strengthening exchange rate attributed to decreasing demand and speculative activities. Parallel market insights reveal a noticeable increase in the naira's value, climbing from N1600/$1 to a selling rate between N1500/$1 and N1550/$1. The purchase rate stands at N1400/$1, enabling traders a profit margin of N100/$1. Parallel market traders have conveyed their satisfaction with the naira's appreciation, noting its beneficial impact on business operations.
Additionally, the official market exchange rate dropped to N1,560/$1 on Tuesday, marking the naira's strongest position since March 4, when it was at N1534/$1. The CBN's comprehensive financial strategy, under the guidance of President Tinubu, underlines a significant improvement in the nation's economic framework and currency stabilisation efforts.
