Senegal were level at 2-2 with Belgium until the 120th minute, when Belgium were awarded a penalty and scored the winning goal from it.

What made the moment even more controversial was that, after the game, ArchivoVAR stated that the penalty should never have been awarded. According to them, Youri Tielemans deliberately initiated the contact with Lamine Camara, and the incident did not meet the “clear and obvious error” threshold required for VAR intervention. In their view, the decision to award the penalty was incorrect.

The Senegal players strongly protested the decision and believed there was no foul, but they couldn’t walk off the pitch like what happened in the Africa Cup of Nations final. Following that incident, FIFA officially introduced a rule for the World Cup.

Under the rule, the referee can send off any player who leaves the field in protest, dismiss any team official who encourages players to do so, and declare the team that abandons the game as the loser.

That’s why Senegal’s players couldn’t repeat the walk-off scene. Instead, they had to watch one of the most heartbreaking defeats in their World Cup history, second only to their golden-goal loss to Turkey at the 2002 World Cup.
