A few things:

The climate of the south was oppressively hot and humid, which led to White slaves(most from cold Ireland) often times dying, getting sick or being unable to work. Oh wait, INDENTURED SERVANTS, sorry, not slaves.

Poor Whites didn't want to do it, as the working conditions and pay were miserable. Land was abundant and they preferred to work on their own little farms or plots of land. Or if they brought skills with them from the old country(blacksmithing, carpentry etc.) they'd just do that.

They tried using Native slaves then, but the Natives would just pack up at night and run away to their tribe.

So blacks were all that remained.

All in all, just rich assholes refusing to pay normal wages and resorting to slaves. It's the same thing companies do nowadays with illegals.
