If it weren’t for the Congo, there wouldn’t be any iPhones in the world. The world’s biggest tech company, especially Apple, relies on cobalt mining in the country to power its iPhones. But it’s also a source of child labor and the deaths of thousands of people, while the world watches.
In the meantime, the use of forced labor in the Congo is becoming more common, due to the proliferation of armed groups in the country that are funded by multinational companies to run multiple mines.
In March 2024, More than 40 000 children are working in hazardous conditions in cobalt mines in the Katanga province alone, according to the UN.
