It’s the exact same magic with cats in prison programs. Prison forces people to wear a tough mask to survive, but a cat doesn't care about a cell block hierarchy or a person's past. When an inmate holds a cat, that survival act vanishes. Animals have a unique key for the human heart; they remind the isolated and the hardened that beneath the armor, they are still human.
