@stanislavfort But "similar work in this space" citations still do epistemic work. Instead of doing extra work to establish a claim yourself, you point to prior work. Making up the citation is akin to cutting the line by pretending there already is broad empirical support for your assumptions.

This is why I love the AI crisis. Blind-citing happened all the time (https://t.co/GTDqbx0KxZ) with errors blindly carried forward in the literature, due to people citing sources they never actually read. AI-hallucinations have just made this conduct explicit and unmistakeable.
