The Shield That Grew Up

A long time ago, in Kenya, there were Kikuyu boys about 15 to 18 years old.
Before they became warriors, they had to learn to dance for their Irua initiation.

Each group of boys had a small wooden shield.
People called it a ndome (or ndomi).

The shield was not for fighting.

It was small and light.
The boys wore the shield's ring under their left armpit so it stood high over their shoulders during dances.

There was a small eye-shaped hole in the middle so the boy could peer through it.

Every group painted its own pattern on the front of the shield.

Some had triangles. Some had zigzags.

When people saw the pattern, they knew which territorial group the boy was from.

After the boys grew up and became warriors,
they used the same pattern on their big war shields.

The paint on the little shield would get old.
So people would scrape it off and paint it again for the next generation.

That is why some shields were used by a father,
then by his son, and then by his grandson.
They became family heirlooms to keep.

One shield was taken to London in 1903.
Now it lives in the British Museum.

You can still see the slot for the eyes,
and the old lines under the paint.
It tells the story of boys who danced,
learned, and grew up to be men.
