@Steptoes_orphan@joeywheelerT4@DavidDavisMP If one side holds all the records, surely that’s an argument for greater scrutiny, not less? Accountability isn’t hatred of Britain. It’s how institutions, including the British Army, learn from mistakes, improve and maintain public trust. Surely that’s something to welcome.
@joeywheelerT4@DavidDavisMP Robert McCartney’s family deserves justice. Absolutely. But justice isn’t selective. Demanding accountability for one killing while dismissing questions about another isn’t a principle. It’s a double standard. Why should any family be denied the truth?
@joeywheelerT4@DavidDavisMP And that’s precisely the problem. Justice shouldn’t depend on who won or who gets to write the history. If accountability only applies to the defeated, it isn’t justice at all.
@Steptoes_orphan@joeywheelerT4@DavidDavisMP Yes, absolutely. Accountability should apply to everyone, including the IRA and the British Army. The difference is, I’m not defending one while demanding answers from the other. Are you?
@joeywheelerT4@DavidDavisMP When an army kills its own citizens, surely the very least we should expect is scrutiny of its actions. Why should the army be above accountability?
@MPIainDS we cannot ignore the documented collusion between British intelligence, the security forces and loyalist paramilitaries? The UDA, UVF and Ulster Resistance must also be part of this conversation. If we genuinely want the truth about the Troubles.
@MPIainDS Every victim deserves truth and justice. You cannot demand accountability for the crimes of one side while making excuses for those committed by the other. That isn’t justice, it’s hypocrisy.
@MPIainDS Nobody should defend the IRA, but what about the UDA, UVF and Ulster Resistance? Surely accountability cannot be selective? And if the British Army was there to uphold the law, shouldn’t its actions be subject to that same law? Every victim deserves truth and justice.
@MarkRobinsonNI I actually find it offensive that our national flag is being portrayed as something divisive. It’s a symbol of our country, and its very colours represent peace and unity between different traditions. Why should we be made to feel uncomfortable about displaying it?
@duponline@GRobinsonDUP But what exactly is unionism’s long-term plan? Surely it needs a vision beyond simply opposing Sinn Féin. Where is the plan for a shared future?
@carlalockhart Since when is listening to a community pandering to terrorism? Does the same apply to Ulster Resistance? Policing must be impartial, not selective.
@PaulWil38543502 IRA violence deserves condemnation, absolutely. But does that same condemnation extend to loyalist violence and Ulster Resistance, or is accountability only expected from one side?
