Tackling homelessness and its root causes must be a priority for the next government. As we await the election results, @RoryWeal shows how the housing crisis fuels rural homelessness, and how it can be overcome #RuralHomelessnessCounts#RuralHousingWeek

To drive action we need the next govt to prioritise the crisis of rising hunger.
If we do, there’s no reason why we can’t halve need for food banks over the next Parliament. But it requires political will. Coverage below 👇
Great to see @MailOnline covering this vital issue - soaring hunger & hardship damage the nation's health, hold back our economy & blight the prospects of young people. We can absolutely fix it, But we need all political leaders to step up. https://t.co/qlxcMQ1WrC
❗ Food banks in our network provided over 3.1 MILLION food parcels in the last year.
📢 This isn’t right. But the next government has the power to change it.
Policy expert Rory shares 6️⃣ actions the next government needs to take to end the need for food banks. #WorldHungerDay
A general election called just one week after @TrussellTrust announced having to provide the highest number of food parcels ever.
In the campaign we need to hear what political parties are going to do to turn the tide.
🚨 🧵 The General Election has been called.
Last week, we announced over 3.1 MILLION emergency food parcels were provided by food banks in our network in the past year.
All political parties must now commit to building a future where no one needs a food bank to survive.⤵️

We heard this week about new record levels of food bank need.
@TrussellTrust manifesto lays out the building blocks to end hunger in the UK. Read my blog for the summary version https://t.co/P4c92PlBv5
🚨 Food banks in our network provided a record number of emergency food parcels last year.
But how many was it?
🎤 We asked the public if they could guess - and what they think needs to change to create a future where no one needs emergency food to survive.
✅An overhauled employment support offer.
✅Scrap the two-child limit.
✅New workers’ rights legislation.
✅Build 90,000 new social homes every year in England.
✅Empower communities with places, spaces, and public transport which build connection.

Today @TrussellTrust release stats showing more food parcels given out last year than ever before.
The first time we've crossed 3 million. Up 94% in 5 years. A shameful record.
With an election on the horizon, now is the time for leaders to act - our manifesto sets out how 👇
The foodbank charity The Trussell Trust says it’s handed out a record 3.1 million emergency food parcels in the past year.
More than a million were given to children but there’s been a significant rise in the number of older people needing help.
How to build this future?
✅Essentials Guarantee into Universal Credit.
✅Tackle debt deductions.
✅Long-term strategy for local crisis support.
✅Access affordable credit and advice on money matters.
✅Swift and accurate decisions about disability benefits.
But @CommonsWorkPen today set out how we can turn this tide. Starting with designing our social security system with clear principles and objective calculations of the cost of essentials in mind.
#GuaranteeOurEssentials@Jrf_uk @TrussellTrust
Two big stories on poverty today.
1. Government's own data shows food insecurity and need for food banks rising again❌
2. @CommonsWorkPen report sets out how we can reverse these trends, with a social security system which better reflects living costs✅
An increase in % of households needing to use a food bank between 2021/22 and 2022/23 reflects what we see @TrussellTrust.
Underpinned by the high numbers of people experiencing destitution and hardship. Depth of poverty that is damaging to economy, society, and people's health

In the budget the Chancellor said he’d been listening to @trusselltrust & @jrf_uk in taking actions to help low incomes households
But a 6 month extension to HSF and easing some deductions will only provide brief respite for households on lowest incomes.
Our reaction blog 👇
Yesterday, the Chancellor said the Spring Budget would provide long-term solutions.
But, for people on the lowest incomes, he only provided short-term sticking plasters.

#Budget2024 repayment period for #UniversalCredit Budgeting Advances increase from 12 to 24 months. Means over 900,000 families on UC will see less deducted each month from already inadequate UC payments – that’s around 40% of all families who face deductions from their UC 🧵1/4
This is true of most services councils deliver. You name it - youth centres, drug & alcohol clinics, debt advice.
A spiral of reduced money for upstream & preventative work, only being able to provide support to the most acute end, resulting in ever growing need. Needs action.
Council funding crises are putting homelessness services in jeopardy. But it’s only going to cost us all more in the long run
As @Porchlight1974 say ‘we’ve been forced to reduce our homelessness prevention work’
Less £ for prevention = higher needs, higher costs, rinse, repeat
Funding for Kent homelessness services is about to be cut. The cuts come into effect from April. Our ability to support people will be seriously affected and hostels may close. https://t.co/ZeowaQAXCA

📢 New data reveals a 27% increase in people sleeping rough across England, rising across every region. This reflects the deep challenges we see in rural areas:
⬆️Rising #homelessness
⬇️Severe lack of affordable housing
Rough sleeping is inexcusable everywhere – it's time for united action to address this crisis. We must support all communities to combat #ruralhomelessness and ensure safety and dignity for everyone.
