Professor Saleemul Huq OBE (1952-2023)
It is with deep sadness that we share news of the passing of Professor Saleemul Huq, an environmental and climate change giant, and senior fellow and dear friend of IIED and many IIED colleagues past and present.
In 2007, I emailed a bunch of people asking for help to register for the Bali COP. I was a PhD student. @SaleemulHuq’s reply came within seconds ‘come & meet me in London’. My story with @iied & climate fight began, my whole life was shaped. Now I am heartbroken beyond words💔
Mind blowing and awe inspiring at the same time: this yew tree at Dartington hall is 1,500 years old. Just think what life is in its roots, branches and trunk and what it has witnessed over that time. I hope it will be around for many more years @DartingtonTrust
An example of IIED's approach of bringing marginalised voices to the policy table. We worked with the LDC group to ensure their concerns were integrated into the final agreement 🤝
On the surface, regional commitments and action on the environment, #HumanRights and gender appear impressive... There are limits to the way the region appreciates, addresses and celebrates unity in diversity. And we #LGBTQIA+ peoples know this best...
@IIED spent a year in 2018 pitching for the #BBNJ treaty to be agreed. The high seas are essential to our future and are at risk from those wanting to exploit their treasures. They must be looked after at all costs #biodiversity#HighSeasTreaty
Have you heard about the #HighSeasTreaty? It's a huge win for the #ocean, and it's open for signing and ratification by all countries now.
In this animation we explain why the #BBNJ treaty is so important... https://t.co/taXCTSoPNw
Some people have been in refugee camps since 1968 - it is like a prison . Three generations warehoused in camps. We need a freedom based approach says @ENegash_USCRI
