House Speaker Mike Johnson’s description of Islam as a “misguided religion” is an unfortunate and irresponsible statement, and Speaker Johnson must clarify if he meant to attack Islam in this way.

Islam is one of the world’s great Abrahamic faiths, practiced peacefully by nearly two billion people worldwide and millions of Americans who contribute to this country every day as doctors, teachers, soldiers, entrepreneurs and public servants.

Leaders entrusted with the highest offices in the United States should promote understanding and unity—not stigmatize entire faith communities.

Religious literacy and basic respect are the minimum standards we should expect from those in positions of power.

This kind of rhetoric must be categorically rejected and corrected.

@RepFine, Muslims do not seek the destruction of anyone. We unequivocally reject violence, hatred and calls for destruction against any group.

Islam teaches that peace, justice and compassion are the true paths to security and coexistence. The Holy Quran states: “Whosoever killed a person—unless it be for killing a person or for creating disorder in the land—it shall be as if he had killed all mankind; and whoso saved a life, it shall be as if he had saved the life of all mankind.” (5:33)

Your call for destruction is hateful, reckless and fundamentally at odds with the values this country stands for: justice, due process and the dignity of every human being.

When an elected official declares destruction the answer, they are not protecting lives. They are normalizing the logic of endless war and erasing the humanity of millions of innocent people.

This rhetoric does not make anyone safer. It fuels fear, legitimizes atrocities and corrodes the moral foundations of a democratic society built on the rule of law and human dignity.

Islam upholds the sanctity of life. America claims to do the same. Leaders must be held to that standard.
