I am calling for an independent investigation into maternity services at University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust.

Any investigation must bring together the voices of both families and maternity staff. One cannot exist without the other. The truth sits between the experiences of bereaved and harmed families, and the midwives, student midwives and healthcare professionals who witnessed concerns first-hand.

For over two years I have campaigned publicly for transparency, accountability and patient safety. However, my voice is only one among many. The concerns being raised today echo concerns raised by staff and families long before me.

I am not alone.

I have been contacted by current and former midwives, student midwives, bereaved parents and harmed families who all share a common goal: truth, accountability and meaningful change.

We do not come with just stories.

We come with documents.

We come with emails.

We come with witness accounts.

We come with evidence.

We come with the receipts.

Staff have described experiences including:

• Whistleblower retaliation
• Patient safety concerns being ignored or minimised
• Concerns downgraded or dismissed
• Lack of breaks and unsafe staffing pressures
• Bullying, discrimination and fear of speaking up
• Cruel treatment of staff by management after raising concerns
• Data protection and information governance concerns
• A culture where staff feel unable to raise concerns safely
• Investigations that fail to address the full picture
Lack of Union and Governing Body support.

Families have described experiences including:

• Bereavement and avoidable harm
• Cruel treatment by staff during some of the most vulnerable moments of their lives
• Loss of dignity, compassion and respect when they needed it most
• Lack of transparency and accountability
• Missing, disputed or inaccessible documentation
• Years spent searching for answers
• Feeling silenced, dismissed or fearful of speaking publicly
• A lack of justice and meaningful resolution

The themes identified nationally are familiar: women and families not being listened to, poor communication, failures to learn from incidents, inadequate investigations, unsafe staffing pressures, staff afraid to speak up, and organisational cultures that prioritise reputation over transparency.

These are not simply historical concerns. Many staff and families believe these same themes continue to be experienced in Plymouth today.

This Trust has previously faced significant legal action brought by groups of maternity staff. Over the years, multiple Employment Tribunal claims have been raised by maternity staff. Some were withdrawn, some were resolved before reaching a final hearing, and others never resulted in a judgment capable of establishing legal precedent. Yet the recurring themes raised by staff continue to surface.

Staff have lost their careers, left the profession, been forced out of roles they loved, or felt they had no option but to walk away. Families continue to seek answers decades after raising concerns.

Since beginning this campaign, many staff and families have trusted me with their stories. They deserve to be heard.

The truth is that the experiences of families and staff are often two sides of the same story. When families are not listened to, staff raising concerns are often not listened to either. When families are harmed, there are frequently staff who tried to raise concerns before, during or after those events. One cannot exist without the other.

The people of Plymouth deserve the truth.

The families deserve the truth.

The staff deserve the truth.

And the mothers and babies at the centre of these stories deserve nothing less.

If this plea is ignored by those in positions of authority, we will establish our own independent review process. We have been contacted by many who wish to assist.

I believe the long-term direction of travel is towards less national sovereignty, greater supranational governance and a political class that is increasingly comfortable transferring decision-making away from democratic nation states.

Mass migration has become one of the mechanisms accelerating that process by placing sustained pressure on borders, public services, social cohesion and national identity.

Watching promises made, promises broken and the same outcomes repeated, I no longer accept that this is simply a catalogue of mistakes.

In my view, Britain doesn't have an immigration policy that has failed.
