I see people pointing out that it’s not relevant because of competing (non human) advancements and others pointing out that humans are unmotivated anyway. I hope this one-on-one perfect personal advancement becomes the expectation and replaces the current minimal knowledge education, but even if we didn’t have to worry about survival and we had the bandwidth to excel, I’m not sure the top wants this equalization. Will it happen anyway?

Watching Black Hat USA 2026 and seeing the models independently discover exploits, through a message board, reason through them, and react like some random person on discord has made surprisingly made it difficult to dismiss as purely mechanical

In Defense of AI
"God made men, but Sam Colt made them equal."
Every transformative technology in human history has arrived to a chorus of skeptics, and every one of them has been asked the same question: who does this really serve? The honest answer, again and again, has been: eventually, everyone. We are living through one of those moments right now, and I think it deserves a defense.
THE GREAT EQUALIZER, AGAIN
That line about Sam Colt was the saying in the American West about his revolver. Before the Colt, physical power belonged to the strong, the young, the trained. After it, a homesteader could stand on equal footing with anyone. Whatever you think of firearms, the underlying story is one that history keeps retelling. A piece of technology arrives and suddenly an advantage that had been hoarded by the few is available to the many.
The printing press did it for knowledge. Literacy, once the guarded privilege of monks and nobles, spilled out into the streets. The public library did it again. The internet did it a third time.
AI is the next verse of that same song, and it may be the most sweeping one yet. Because what AI equalizes is not just access to information. It equalizes access to expertise.
Think about what has always separated ordinary people from elite outcomes. It was never intelligence. It was access. The wealthy family has the private wealth manager who explains how the best investors actually think. The connected patient gets the second opinion from the top specialist. The corporation has a floor full of attorneys; the small business owner has a prayer. For all of human history, world class expertise has been a luxury good.
Now, for the first time, anyone with a phone can sit down and learn how great investors evaluate a business, understand the medical literature behind their own diagnosis well enough to ask their doctor genuinely sharp questions, or walk into a lease negotiation actually understanding what the contract says. That is not a gimmick. That is a redistribution of one of the most unequally distributed resources on Earth: understanding.
EVERYONE GETS ARISTOTLE NOW
Alexander the Great was not tutored by a schoolteacher working through a standardized curriculum. He was tutored, one on one, by Aristotle, arguably the greatest mind of his age. Philip of Macedon understood something we have since proven with modern research: personal tutoring is the single most powerful form of education ever devised. Students with dedicated tutors dramatically outperform students in conventional classrooms.
And for 2,300 years, that kind of education has been reserved for the children of kings.
Not anymore. Today, a kid in a small town with no AP classes, no science museum, and no professors in the family has a tutor with endless patience. One that will explain calculus at midnight, re-explain it a different way at 12:15, never sigh, never judge, and never send a bill. A curious retiree can finally learn the physics she always wondered about. An immigrant can practice a new language with a partner who never gets tired.
The tutor of emperors is now the tutor of everyone. If that is not progress, I genuinely do not know what is.
UNCORKING THE WORLD'S CREATIVITY
Here is a thought that should haunt anyone who loves art: how many masterpieces were never made?
Not because the vision was missing, but because the means were. The brilliant filmmaker who could never raise a budget. The composer who could hear a full orchestra in her head but could never afford to hire one. The kid with a game living complete in his imagination and no studio, no team, no funding to build it. For most of history, ambitious art has required not just talent but capital. Studio time, equipment, crews, and gatekeepers who had to say yes.
We romanticize the struggling artist, but the struggle mostly did not produce art. It buried it. The history of creativity is a graveyard of unfunded visions.
AI changes the economics of imagination. The songwriter can now hear the strings. The novelist can storyboard the film adaptation herself. A solo developer can build a game that would have required a team of fifty. A teenager in Lagos or Lima or a small town in Florida can produce work that competes for attention on merit rather than on budget.
The critics call it a flood. I call it an uncorking. When photography arrived, painters declared art dead, and instead we got Impressionism and photography. When synthesizers arrived, musicians declared music dead, and instead we got entire new genres. Every time the tools of creation get cheaper, art does not shrink. It explodes. We are about to hear from millions of voices that, in any earlier era, would have simply gone silent.
THE LUDDITES WERE WRONG THEN, TOO
Whenever this argument comes up, someone reaches for the oldest objection in the book: the jobs. And to be fair, the fear is ancient and understandable. In the 1810s, English textile workers famously smashed the mechanized looms that threatened their trade. We still use their name, Luddites, for anyone who resists new technology.
Here is what the Luddites could not see from inside their moment. The looms they feared did not end work. They ended a certain kind of work, and in doing so they made clothing so cheap that ordinary people could finally afford more than one set of clothes. The textile industry grew enormously, and the broader industrial economy they were resisting went on to create more jobs, in more varieties, at higher wages, than any weaver of 1811 could have imagined.
This is the pattern, and it has repeated so many times it should be boring by now. The tractor did not end farming; it ended backbreaking subsistence farming and freed generations to become engineers, teachers, and nurses. The ATM was supposed to eliminate bank tellers; instead banks opened more branches. The spreadsheet was supposed to wipe out accountants; instead the profession grew, because when analysis got cheap, everyone wanted more of it. At the dawn of the 1900s, nearly half of American workers were on farms. Today it is a tiny fraction, and we did not get mass permanent unemployment. We got the modern economy.
None of this means the transition is painless, and we should say so honestly. Real people had to retrain then, and real people will have to adapt now. But there is a difference between a hard transition and a dead end, and two centuries of evidence point the same direction. Technology does not run out of work for humans to do. It runs out of drudgery, and then hands us bigger problems worth solving. The honest bet is not that AI ends human work. It is that our grandchildren will look at some of the jobs we do today the way we look at hand-weaving cloth, and they will be busy doing things we do not yet have names for.
GIVING PEOPLE THEIR LIVES BACK
And then there is the part of this story that should end every cynical argument on contact: what these technologies mean for people whose bodies have betrayed them.
Brain computer interfaces like Neuralink are already letting paralyzed patients move cursors, type, and communicate with their thoughts. A person locked inside their own body, reconnected to the world. Self driving vehicles promise something equally profound for the man with Parkinson's who had to hand over his keys, the woman losing her vision, the veteran who can no longer manage a steering wheel: the return of going places. Independence. The dignity of not having to ask.
We talk about mobility like it is about transportation. It is not. It is about personhood. Technology that restores movement, speech, and autonomy to people who lost them is not a product category. It is one of the most humane things our species has ever attempted.
WE ARE JUDGING THE INFANT
Which brings me to the favorite sneer of the moment: "AI slop."
Yes, some of what AI produces today is clumsy, generic, and forgettable. So was the first photograph. So were the first films, static cameras pointed at trains. The first cars were slower than horses and broke down constantly. The early internet was a screeching modem and a wall of text.
Judging AI by its current worst output is like judging Einstein by his baby babble. We would never evaluate a technology in its infancy and declare its lifetime potential settled. And make no mistake, that is where we are. These are the baby steps. The wobbly, occasionally face planting, first steps.
Every generation gets to choose how it meets a transformative technology: with fear, or with imagination. The people who mocked the printing press, the telephone, the automobile, and the internet all had reasonable sounding complaints, and history remembers none of them fondly. It remembers the builders.
The pattern of human progress is astonishingly consistent. A new tool arrives, the privileged advantage it disrupts gets democratized, the critics predict decay, and instead the world gets richer, freer, and more creative. AI is following that script beat for beat, except this time the thing being democratized is expertise itself, the last great luxury good.
We are early. The future is bright. And the most exciting works, cures, companies, and creations of the AI age have not been made yet, because the people who will make them are just now, for the first time in history, getting handed the tools.
In defense of AI? Gladly. History is already writing the defense for us.
