Foreign aid's impact defies its tiny 1% share of the federal budget. Within this small slice, humanitarian aid (0.2%) and global health programs (0.14%) have achieved remarkable results: maternal deaths down 34%, extreme poverty reduced 27%, polio cases cut 99%, 25 million lives saved from HIV/AIDS, and malaria cases halved across Africa.

Deputy Director of Emergency Preparedness and Response for Project HOPE, Chessa Latifi, is on the ground in Los Angeles assessing the historic wildfires, which continue decimating communities and displacing tens of thousands of people.

Coordinating with local organizations and shelters, we have identified PPE, hygiene supplies, and bedding items as the most urgently needed supplies due to families fleeing the dangerous impacts of the uncontained fires, many having lost their homes and everything they owned.

The immediate destruction is staggering, but the long-term impacts will be felt for years to come – impacting people’s mental health, straining our health systems, and leaving thousands without a home or community to return to.

Project HOPE is prepared to support local shelters, health workers, and marginalized communities to fill in gaps related to care and support.

"The health sector is facing a significant shortage of specialized medical staff, including doctors, nurses, and technicians. Additionally, most health facilities in the south are reporting a lack of nearly all pharmaceuticals."

Project HOPE has delivered a shipment containing urgently needed medicine and medical supplies to serve over 5,000 people in southwestern Syria.

We will continue to work swiftly to deliver critical medical supplies to health facilities in communities lacking access to care and support.

While people in Lebanon can breathe a sigh of relief that violence has subsided, there is work to be done to restore Lebanon's health system. People with diabetes and hypertension do not have access to lifesaving medication.

Over 1M people in Lebanon are displaced. I visited schools that have turned into shelters in Mount Lebanon and the reality is bleak. Multiple families share small rooms and dozens share one shower. Parents are terrified and doing everything they can to protect their children.

People remaining in Rafah have little access to aid due to evacuation orders and the abrupt closure of the Rafah border crossing.

Israel has launched a ground invasion in Rafah. The international community warned of this for months.

This has already proven to be catastrophic.

Israel and Hamas must come to a ceasefire agreement and hostage deal quickly. Millions of lives hang in the balance.

I continue to be haunted by the loss of my colleague, Mohammed, in Gaza this week.

The human impact of this war cannot be overstated. Over 30,000 people have died. Each of them had family and friends and lived meaningful lives.

Air drops should always be the very last resort in humanitarian situations.

We know that 30% of the aid is destroyed in the process  and conflict can erupt around drop sites if they are unmanaged. The focus should be on getting aid waiting on the borders into Gaza safely.

Today’s food aid delivery in Gaza City was meant to be a lifeline for those experiencing severe hunger but it ended in a bloodbath. Civilians should never be the target of such an atrocious attack.
