NEW COLUMN: The Liberals made this mess, don't blame Danielle Smith
Alberta is inching toward a separation referendum, and a lot of people are pointing fingers at Premier Danielle Smith.
They've got the wrong target.
For 40 years, Liberal governments treated Alberta like a piggy bank while blocking its economy from growing. From Pierre Trudeau's National Energy Program to Justin Trudeau's "no more pipelines" bill, the message was clear: the West doesn't matter.
Now Carney sells the appearance of progress on a pipeline that still has no shovels in the ground.
You can't spend decades frustrating a province and act shocked when it starts asking if Confederation is worth it. If a referendum comes, the Liberals earned it.

“Even foreign ambassadors posted in Ottawa are talking about it. When diplomats from other countries are quietly snickering at the weakness of the government’s front bench, we may have a serious problem.” https://t.co/i3YOrwyde3
"Some lobbyists have become so disillusioned with certain ministers that they are circumventing those offices entirely and taking their concerns directly to Carney’s staff. Meanwhile, journalists are hearing from bureaucrats and political staffers who question whether their own ministers have a real grasp of their portfolios, or the management skills necessary to get policies moving. These are the people who work alongside these ministers every day.
Even foreign ambassadors posted in Ottawa are talking about it. When diplomats from other countries are quietly snickering at the weakness of the government’s front bench, we may have a serious problem.
Several names keep surfacing. Artificial Intelligence Minister Evan Solomon, Immigration Minister Lena Diab, and Housing Minister Gregor Robertson are all mentioned regularly." @RoyceKoop
NEW COLUMN: Carney's cabinet not measuring up, and people are noticing
Mark Carney promised a new era of competent government. One year in, his own MPs aren't buying it.
In Ottawa, lobbyists, journalists, even Liberal MPs are openly asking why so many weak ministers still have their jobs.
Names keep surfacing: Solomon, Diab, Robertson, Joly. Even foreign diplomats are quietly snickering at the front bench.
He's going to have to make some tough decisions about who really belongs.

This is good news. But we must ask, why weren't they already doing this? Why did big corporations and Liberal politicians tell us that Canadians don't want to work? And who else is using the temporary foreign workers program but doesn't actually need it?
NEW COLUMN: Time to tackle shoplifting, before it turns into even more crime
Winnipeg's shoplifting crisis is shutting down businesses and we're all paying the price. Yet another 7-Eleven is closing due to shoplifting.
Some call it a "survival crime," but police data tells a different story: much of it is organized, profit-driven theft. And the costs don't disappear. They get passed straight to consumers, fuelling the very grocery inflation used to justify stealing in the first place.
The "broken windows" theory warns us where this leads: small crimes ignored become big crimes normalized. It also tells us what’s needed: real enforcement, real consequences for repeat offenders, and a culture that stops making excuses.
Stealing is wrong. Full stop.

NEW COLUMN: Government choices leaving young Canadians behind
Young Canadians are struggling in the job market, with the unemployment rate hitting 20.2 percent in the first quarter of 2026. Meanwhile youth in other countries, including the U.S., are flourishing.
A new report demonstrates that’s largely a result of government choices: the federal Liberals’ massive increases in immigration and temporary worker targets that ignored the implications for young Canadians and 2. rapidly increasing minimum wages which constrain employers’ ability to hire in response to changes in the labour market.
Think about that: young Canadians are suffering not because of AI or offshoring or a pandemic or anything, but rather because the federal Liberals and some provincial governments made choices that didn’t take their interests into account.
We need governments that are going to act in the interests of young Canadians.

The tragedy of the SS Komagata Maru remains a shameful mark on Canada’s past.
110 years on, we remember the 376 Punjabis denied entry to our shores due to the discriminatory laws of the time and recommit to our work of making Canada the freest country on earth for all.
Your tax dollars were used by the CBC to target, harass, and humiliate retired RCMP officers.
This is a new low. The CBC must answer how this was allowed to happen, and apologize to the retired officers they involved.
I was really delighted to have been present this past weekend to celebrate Rick Pinchin's birthday and all his many contributions to our community, including his countless years with the PC constituency association in Fort Garry. Southwood Golf and Country Club is a great space for events like this!
Congratulations to @steveouthouse on his been named to Chief of Staff in @PierrePoilievre’s office. He’s done the job in multiple governments and has tremendous insights into how Conservatives work and win across Canada!
COLUMN: OF COURSE Pallister deserves the Order of Manitoba
Former Premier Brian Pallister will soon be inducted into the Order of Manitoba. That's pretty standard for former premiers. But that didn't stop a columnist from attacking Pallister, arguing that he shouldn't recieve the order because he didn't like some of the things Pallister did in office. I think that's a terrible standard to set. If we can't even give former premiers a standard honour for their willingness to lead, then our democracy must be in rough shape indeed.
