Nationwide Applause! Nigerians, Security Experts Celebrate Tinubu’s Choice of Christopher Musa as Defence Minister
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has forwarded the name of former Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Gwabin Musa, to the Senate for confirmation as Nigeria’s new Minister of Defence.
The nomination follows Monday’s resignation of Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, who stepped down on health grounds. In a letter addressed to Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Tinubu said Musa was being presented as Badaru’s replacement, expressing confidence in his ability to strengthen Nigeria’s security posture.
Musa, 58, born on December 25, 1967, in Sokoto, is a decorated military officer whose career spans over three decades. He served as Chief of Defence Staff from 2023 to October 2025 and was recipient of the prestigious Colin Powell Award for Soldiering in 2012.
A graduate of the Nigerian Defence Academy, Musa was commissioned as Second Lieutenant in 1991 and has held several strategic posts, including Commander Sector 3 Operation Lafiya Dole, Theatre Commander Operation Hadin Kai, and Commander Nigerian Army Infantry Corps.
His nomination has drawn widespread public approval, with many Nigerians describing it as a major confidence boost for defence leadership. The Senate is expected to screen and confirm his appointment in the coming days.
