Consider the ages. Thomas Jefferson drafted the Declaration of Independence at 33. James Monroe crossed the Delaware and took a bullet at Trenton at 18. Aaron Burr was 20. Alexander Hamilton commanded an artillery company at around 21, and the Marquis de Lafayette arrived to offer his life to the cause at 19. Nathan Hale had one life to give at 21. Edward Rutledge signed his name to treason — a hanging offense — at 26, the youngest to do so.

Eleven years later, at the Constitutional Convention, the room was older but not by much. James Madison, the man who did more than anyone to design the thing, was 36. Gouverneur Morris, who gave the Preamble its final ringing language, was 35. Alexander Hamilton was around 30. Jonathan Dayton, the youngest delegate, was 26.

These were not grey elder statesmen handing down wisdom from on high. They were young men who had just clawed their way out from under one king’s authority, and who understood, with the clarity of people who had bled for it, that the danger was not this king or that one — it was the throne itself.

So they built against it. They separated the powers so no branch could swallow the rest. They set the legislature against the executive and the courts against them both. They made every office a lease and never a deed, returned to the people at regular intervals. They assumed, correctly, that ambitious and unworthy men would come — and they tried to build something sturdy enough to outlast them.

They did not get everything right. Some of what they got wrong was grievous, and left to later generations to struggle over and repair. But the central conviction — that structure must outlast personality, that no one is owed a crown no matter how loudly he wants one — has held for nearly two and a half centuries.

To the young men who could scarcely have imagined the country they were making: they built a system designed to turn away anyone reaching for a throne, and it is still, today, doing its work.
