The Panama Canal was not an idea that appeared in the 19th century. As early as 1529, Álvaro de Saavedra suggested the possibility of an interoceanic canal through the Isthmus of Panama. A few years later, on February 20, 1534, Emperor Charles V of Spain ordered a survey to evaluate whether such a project was feasible. The study included the Chagres River and a possible route toward the South Sea, now known as the Pacific Ocean. It also required an estimate of the cost and time needed to build the work. The conclusion at the time was that the project would be almost impossible because of its cost and difficulty. Instead, it was recommended to improve navigation on the Chagres River and repair the Camino de Cruces. Nearly four centuries later, that early vision became one of the most important waterways in the world.
