Coaches: when players feel they matter, they feel seen, important & needed through how others treat them.
Scholars have deemed mattering to be a core instinct that drives all human behaviour. Thatโs why, when someone doesnโt believe they matter in a sports team they:
- wonโt share their voice if they donโt believe their voice is significant
- wonโt use their strengths if they donโt believe they have strengths
- wonโt contribute if they donโt believe they have something to contribute
- wonโt care as much as if they feel cared for
The above has been slightly adapted for sport from a post by @helenbevan on โXโ that promotes the great work of @ZachMercurio on โXโ on the importance of human matteringโฆplease consider following both for more great content applicable to sports settingsโฆ
