He hoped life insurance would cover roughly $300,000 in debt built up after droughts and falling crop prices. It did not. Contemporary reporting put insurance proceeds well below the remaining debt; one policy had also lapsed. There was a press conference at Trump Tower. On December 23, 1986, Annabel Hill and her son Jim attended a mortgage-burning ceremony in the Trump Tower atrium. Photographers were there.
