Seems there’s been some controversy as of late, regarding speculative ideas on the periphery of physics, geometric unity in particular. This controversy is understandable, but unnecessary.

All new ideas are wrong until proven otherwise. That’s ok. New ideas should be explored earnestly anyway. It’s not a condemnation to say that something hasn’t yet been validated.

We shouldn’t be too eager to shut down new ideas, especially before those ideas have been developed enough to stand on their own. There is something distasteful about being too eager to crush someone’s intellectual effort. Constructive feedback is better. Highlight what’s promising, encourage refinement, and withhold belief until the idea earns it (while sincerely hoping that the idea can and will earn it).

At the same time, those exploring bold new ideas should do so with a healthy dose of humility. Overselling a half-formed theory risks discrediting the whole project. See: string theory.

Anyway, my two cents here are just that we should all get along, and encourage divergent thinking, without losing sight of the strict epistemic standards that make physics the truest form of scientific inquiry.

Currently rendering “Superconductivity and the Higgs Field”, a ~5 hour video at 4K, 60 fps. My computer is getting hot and is throttling its performance to prevent overheating. So I’ve just opened the windows to drop the temperature overnight.

It was either that, or put the laptop in the fridge, but I couldn’t figure out how to run the power cord inside without drilling a hole. Plus, condensation would likely make the laptop wet. So, cold apartment it is.

Making YouTube videos isn’t always easy. Sometimes you have to wear warm pajamas and get under a lot of blankets.
