Just arrived in Beirut after last week’s devastating strikes. Over 1 million people displaced in this small country. I am here in solidarity —and to urgently push for protection of civilians and an end to this spiraling conflict.
In Beirut with @Refugees@BarhamSalih where bulldozers are still clearing the rubble looking for missing people following devastating Israeli strikes last Wednesday
Today, areas in Beirut where many people had fled to seek safety have been struck.
Even in displacement, people are not safe.
Civilians are not a target. They must be protected at all times.
Around 1/4 of people in Lebanon are currently under Israeli evacuation orders. Jeremy Ristord, our head of mission, describes how 400,000 people, in an area the size of Manhattan, had one hour to flee. The resulting chaos means people are sleeping in cars, and are in need of water and essentials.
“The humanitarian needs are immense at the moment and are growing by the minute.”
UNHCR’s representative in Lebanon @KarolinaBilling speaks to @SkyNews from Beirut on the humanitarian impact of the escalating hostilities in Lebanon 🇱🇧.
This morning, I visited with @Imran_Riza a collective shelter in Beirut hosting +145 families displaced by the escalating hostilities. Many fled with nothing.
UNHCR & our partner @makhzoumi are distributing mattresses & blankets but much more is needed to save lives & dignity.
Once again, civilians in #Lebanon are bearing the brunt of escalating hostilities: lives lost, health facilities damaged, families displaced.
Humanitarians are on the ground supporting the national response to reach those in need. Civilians and healthcare must be protected.
#Israel orders mass evacuation of entire neighborhoods in southern suburbs of #Beirut-home to at least 1/2 million people. This comes after mass evacuation for 1/3 of south #Lebanon yesterday. A shift from evacuating buildings/targeted attacks. Total panic across the city.
After long, exhausting journeys fleeing airstrikes &seeking safety, families are arriving at Gov-designated shelters.
Yesterday, UNHCR teams with partners delivered mattresses &blankets at a collective shelter in Batroun.
And this continues today, as many people need support.
At least 29000 people were forced to flee their homes in #Lebanon today following Israeli army threats of more air strikes and evacuation orders to at least 52 Lebanese villages
Recent fighting in E & NE #Syria has forced thousands of families to flee looking for safety during harsh winter conditions
UNHCR is supporting with core relief items but safety and access to humanitarian actors is needed to be able to scale up the response to the growing needs
It’s official!
@BarhamSalih, former President of Iraq, has been elected as the next High Commissioner for Refugees.
Having been a refugee himself, he brings powerful lived experience to lead UNHCR.
We’re excited to welcome him soon. 💙
UNHCR has a new High Commissioner & he is from this Middle East, a region riddled with conflicts and displaced populations & eager for solutions
I am honoured to have been elected as the incoming United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. As a former refugee, I know first-hand how protection and opportunity can change the course of a life. That experience will inform a leadership approach grounded in empathy, pragmatism, and a principled commitment to international law. My foremost responsibility will be to refugees and others forced to flee—upholding their rights and dignity and advancing durable solutions so that displacement remains a temporary situation, not a permanent fate.
At a time of record displacement and severe pressure on humanitarian resources, delivering on UNHCR’s mandate requires a renewed focus on impact, accountability, and efficiency. This is a shared responsibility. UNHCR will build on the important reforms undertaken in recent years to strengthen operational effectiveness and value for money. I will work with Member States and partners across the public, private, and philanthropic sectors to mobilize the capacity, resources, and collective will needed to reach those most in need.
I am grateful to the Secretary-General, António Guterres, and to the General Assembly for their confidence, and to High Commissioner Filippo Grandi for his principled and tireless leadership during a period of extraordinary global challenge.
I look forward to working closely with UNHCR’s dedicated staff, states, partners, host communities, and, most importantly, refugees themselves to advance protection and durable solutions fit for both the promise and the perils of the 21st century.
