I'm winding down my Twitter account in response to Elon Musk's bullying and removal of the Twitter security council. You can find me on mastodon: https://t.co/1wFoi9lvvl
2/2 There's some really good points in the article but, as usual, undermined by @simonjenkins4 propensity to extrapolate from single data points and generally make stuff up.
More nonsense from @simonjenkins4 . Evidence please for: (1) stamp duty putting elderly people off downsizing; (2) the UK using space in the least efficient way in Europe and (3) housing "causing" the UK to be the most nature depleted in Europe. 1/2
While people in Ukraine are being bombed and others in Europe can't afford to heat their homes, some sickos are making millions from the uncertainty in the market. #brokensystem
‘The profits of commodity traders like Trafigura look grotesque as bombs are falling and people freezing’. Yep, but they’re not only profiteering - they’re driving the volatility and price rises through speculation. https://t.co/h7Ozg8PQMY
Sunak says he's "shocked" to read of Baroness Mone pocketing millions - hasn't he paid attention to rest of his party? Hancock's Covid contracts for his own family? Ex Health Minister Lord Bethell in cahoots with lobbyist Tory MP Owen Paterson? So much for Govt "integrity" #PMQs
The idea of an ‘endangered identity’ was a major motif of the Nazi version of cultural criticism & political anthropology. ‘Remember who you are’ was a key formula of Nazi ideology which propagated a solution to that 'problem' of identity: ‘Race always tells us what we are.’
To remind you of who #TheFeatherSpeech is campaigning for🪶these are the faces we are trying to help. These birds successfully fledged so right now, should be in African skies. #EveryBirdCounts Sign and share⬇️ https://t.co/lboVopl869

@graemelyons@Natures_Voice I did a paid summer job with Ambios in Devon. Was amazing for me as I couldn't afford to do the volunteering or a masters. Didn't need a driver's license either.
@JjhColin@GordonBrown 🤣🤣🤣 ok.. from 1997 to 2007, was the best 10 years of growth, economic and political stability for decades … the tories have broken this country
@_ficus I was once at a conference where an architect said although it would be great if we could have algae in window panes producing energy, it would be the end of the human race because no one looks attractive in green light so no one would have sex anymore. I wish he had been joking.
All killer no filler from @nickhillman, nailing why yesterday’s ‘foreign student ban’ kite flying was mad as well as bad - but also where it likely came from and why (and what to do about it). A must read. https://t.co/X515Vz2bBT via @timeshighered
@catherinerowett@LuckyHeronSay I use a push scooter that I can take on the train (had two bikes nicked from stations). But doesn't solve the baby/toddler travel issue? Really if we just didn't have cars we would all cope just fine, but if you've got one it's hard not to use it. And baby/toddler phase is short.
@catherinerowett@LuckyHeronSay Renting worked when both could commute by train; 1 of us can't now, so needed car. Once you have 1, makes financial sense to use it (tho we try not 2). When we rented, we lived nr train station but car rental place was 45min walk away; another consideration in a car-free future.
@catherinerowett@LuckyHeronSay Or better access to pooled personal transport. Have lived without a car and just hired them in the past but at high time and economic cost compared to owning a car. All became unviable with a child.
@catherinerowett@LuckyHeronSay 2/2 c.) Could work too if everyone did it. Again, as is, couldn't rely on it being there when you get off the train! Especially with a child's seat or trailer. Generally think wholesale change is needed and then more local orientated communities would (hopefully) form.
